ADPD Challenges Mellieħa Land Transfer

ADPD: ‘Reverse Course’ on Mellieħa Land Transfer, or Face Legal Action

Mellieħa’s golden sands are more than just a tourist attraction. They’re a symbol of the town’s identity, and a lifeline for its economy. But now, a controversial land transfer threatens to alter this scene, and the Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) is not taking it lying down.

Land Transfer: A Sea of Controversy

The government’s plans to transfer a stretch of Mellieħa’s coastal land to a private developer have sparked a storm of protest. The 18,000 square meter plot, located near the picturesque Santa Maria Estate, is earmarked for a luxury resort. But locals and environmentalists argue that it’s a step too far.

“This is not just about a piece of land,” says Carmel Cacopardo, AD’s spokesperson. “It’s about the future of Mellieħa. We can’t let our beaches become another victim of unchecked development.”

ADPD: ‘No to Sell-Off, Yes to Sustainable Tourism’

The Alternattiva Demokratika Partit (ADPD) has been at the forefront of the opposition to this transfer. They’re calling on the government to reverse its decision, and instead promote sustainable tourism that respects Mellieħa’s unique character.

“We’re not against development,” says Cacopardo. “But it must be responsible, and it must have the support of the community. This transfer does neither.”

ADPD is proposing an alternative vision for the site, one that includes public spaces, eco-tourism initiatives, and perhaps even a marine reserve. They’ve also threatened legal action if the government goes ahead with the transfer.

Mellieħa Residents: ‘Our Beaches are Not for Sale’

Residents of Mellieħa have been vocal in their opposition to the land transfer. Protests have been held, petitions signed, and social media campaigns launched. The hashtag #MelliehaBeachesNotForSale has been trending locally.

“We’ve seen what unchecked development can do to our islands,” says Maria Grech, a Mellieħa resident. “We won’t let that happen here. Our beaches are not for sale.”

Government: ‘Balancing Act Between Development and Conservation’

The government, however, maintains that the land transfer is part of a balanced approach to development and conservation. They argue that the luxury resort will bring jobs and investment to Mellieħa, while also providing much-needed tourist accommodation.

But with ADPD vowing to challenge the decision in court, and public opinion firmly against the transfer, the government may find that this is one battle they can’t afford to lose.
