ADPD Urges Gov’t: Reverse Mellieħa Land Transfer
ADPD: ‘Reverse Course’ on Mellieħa Land Transfer, Party Urges Government
Mellieħa’s Il-Bajja, a stretch of land nestled between the village core and the sea, has been at the heart of a heated debate. The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) party has called on the government to reverse its decision to transfer this land from the Mellieħa Local Council to the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA).
Why the Outcry?
ADPD’s concerns are echoed by many Mellieħa residents who fear the land, currently used for recreational purposes, could be developed into a tourist complex. This, they argue, could lead to overcrowding and loss of the village’s rural charm. The party has slammed the transfer as ‘secretive’ and ‘undemocratic’, with no public consultation.
“This land belongs to the people of Mellieħa,” said ADPD’s Michael Briguglio. “It’s where we picnic, walk our dogs, and enjoy nature. We won’t stand by and watch it being taken away from us.”
Government’s Stance
The government maintains the transfer is necessary for the MTA to manage and develop the area, promising it will remain a public space. However, ADPD is skeptical, pointing to the MTA’s past projects that have seen public spaces transformed into commercial ventures.
“We’ve seen this movie before,” said Briguglio. “First, they say it’s for the ‘public good’. Then, we end up with another overpriced café or souvenir shop.”
What’s Next?
ADPD has launched a petition, calling on the government to halt the transfer and engage in meaningful dialogue with the Mellieħa community. They plan to present the petition to Parliament and continue to pressure the government to reverse its decision.
“This is about more than just a piece of land,” said Briguglio. “It’s about democracy, transparency, and respect for our communities. We won’t give up until our voices are heard.”
