BCA Halts Early Morning Works at St. Julian’s Collapse Site
BCA Steps In After Early Morning Racket at St. Julian’s Collapse Site
It’s 6:30 AM on a Tuesday, and the usually quiet streets of St. Julian’s are suddenly alive with the hum of machinery. The sound isn’t coming from the nearby construction sites, but from the site of the recent building collapse on Triq San Giljan. Residents, already on edge after the collapse, are now up in arms about the early morning works.
Residents’ Complaints Echo Through St. Julian’s
St. Julian’s resident, Maria Grech, has been living in the area for over 20 years. She’s seen her fair share of construction and renovation, but this is different. “I understand that the site needs to be cleared and made safe,” she says, “but at this hour? It’s ridiculous. I’ve got young children, and they need their sleep for school.” Maria is one of many residents who have been complaining to the Building Control Agency (BCA) about the early morning works.
The BCA, in response to the complaints, has stepped in to investigate. “We’re aware of the residents’ concerns,” says BCA spokesperson, Joseph Borg. “We’re looking into the matter and will take appropriate action if necessary.”
BCA Inspects Site, Issues Stop Work Order
Following the complaints, the BCA conducted an inspection of the site. They found that while the works were necessary to secure the site, the timing was indeed inappropriate. The BCA has since issued a stop work order, effective immediately.
“We’ve ordered the site to cease all works between 7 PM and 7 AM,” says Borg. “This should allow residents to get a good night’s sleep while still allowing the necessary work to be done during the day.”
Developer Responds, Apologizes for Inconvenience
The developer of the site, Malta-based Horizon Developments, has responded to the situation. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused to the residents of St. Julian’s,” says a spokesperson. “We understand a good relationship with the community, and we’re committed to ensuring that our works are carried out in a manner that respects their needs.”
The spokesperson also confirmed that they will be adhering to the BCA’s stop work order, with works now set to resume at 7 AM daily.
As for Maria Grech, she’s relieved by the BCA’s intervention. “I just want to be able to sleep peacefully at night,” she says. “I’m glad someone is finally listening to us.”
