Buġibba’s Square Saga: ADPD Calls for Empowered Local Councils

Stroll down Triq il-Kbira in Buġibba today, and you’ll find a scene that’s been unfolding for years: a half-finished square, a eyesore for locals and tourists alike. The question on everyone’s mind? When will this long-running saga finally reach its end?

Buġibba’s Square: A Tale of Delay and Discontent

The story of Buġibba’s square is a tale of delays, political wrangling, and dwindling public patience. Initially planned in 2014, the project aimed to transform the once-bustling town into a modern, pedestrian-friendly hub. Yet, here we are, eight years later, with the square still a construction site, a stark reminder of the past administration’s promises.

Under the current government, the project has seen some progress. Yet, the pace is slow, and the square remains far from completion. The latest setback? A legal dispute over the project’s tender, which has further delayed the works.

ADPD: Stronger Councils, Stronger Local Governance

The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) Party has been vocal about the Buġibba square debacle, using it as a case study to advocate for stronger local councils. AD’s spokesperson on local government, Michael Briguglio, argues that the current system, where local councils have limited powers, is to blame for such delays.

“Local councils should have more autonomy and resources,” Briguglio says. “They are closer to the people, understand their needs better, and can ensure projects like Buġibba’s square are completed efficiently and effectively.”

Empowering Local Councils: A Path Forward

ADPD proposes several reforms to empower local councils. These include increasing their financial autonomy, expanding their competencies, and strengthening their democratic legitimacy. They also suggest involving local councils in national decision-making processes, ensuring local voices are heard.

Briguglio believes these reforms could have prevented the Buġibba square fiasco. “With more powers and resources, local councils could have overseen this project more effectively, ensuring it was completed on time and to a high standard,” he says.

Yet, change won’t happen overnight. It requires political will and public support. That’s why ADPD is calling on all political parties and the public to back these reforms. “Let’s make local councils the driving force behind our communities’ development,” Briguglio urges.

As for Buġibba’s square, the future remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: it’s high time we learn from our past mistakes and empower our local councils to build a better, more efficient Malta.
