Carl Caruana Begins Prison Sentence for Marsascala Shooting
In the quiet, coastal town of Marsascala, a shooting incident last year through the community. Today, Carl Caruana, the man behind the trigger, began his prison sentence. But how did we get here, and what does this mean for the peaceful Maltese town?
Recapping the Marsascala Shooting
On a balmy evening in August 2021, Marsascala’s usually tranquil atmosphere was shattered. Caruana, a local man, opened fire outside a popular pizzeria on Triq il-Kbira, the town’s main street. The target was a 32-year-old man, who miraculously survived the attack. The incident left the tight-knit community reeling, with many questioning how such violence could occur in their midst.
Caruana’s Conviction and Sentence
In March this year, Caruana was found guilty of attempted murder and other charges. Today, he began serving a 12-year prison sentence at Corradino Correctional Facility. The sentence, handed down by Mr. Justice Antonio Mizzi, took into account Caruana’s lack of previous convictions and his remorse, but also the gravity of the crime and the need to deter similar acts.
“This was a shocking and brazen attack in a public place,” Justice Mizzi said during the sentencing. “The community must be protected from such acts.”
Marsascala Reacts
News of Caruana’s sentence has been met with a mix of relief and sadness in Marsascala. Many residents hope it brings closure and a sense of justice, while others express concern for the victim and his family. Some have also called for stricter gun laws, highlighting the rarity of such incidents in Malta.
Local councillor, Joseph Borg, told Hot Malta, “Marsascala is a peaceful town. We don’t want to see such incidents again. We need to focus on prevention and rehabilitation, not just punishment.”
Meanwhile, the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, has expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from the community. He told Hot Malta, “I’m just glad it’s over. I can start to move on now.”
As Caruana begins his sentence, Marsascala looks to the future. The town is planning a community event to promote peace and unity. The event, scheduled for later this month, will include music, art, and speeches from local leaders. It’s a clear sign that Marsascala is determined to move forward, stronger and more united than ever.
As one resident put it, “Marsascala is more than just a town. It’s a family. And like any family, we go through tough times. But we always come out stronger.”
