Carl Caruana Sentenced: Marsascala Shooting Case Concludes

In a quiet, sun-drenched street off Triq il-Kbira in Marsascala, the echoes of a violent incident from two years ago finally faded today as Carl Caruana was handed a prison sentence. The 35-year-old, a local resident, was found guilty of shooting and injuring a man during a heated argument in the summer of 2019.

Gunshot Resonates Through Peaceful Marsascala

Marsascala, known for its tranquil fishing villages and vibrant summer scene, was shaken when the gunshot rang out on that warm July evening. The victim, a 42-year-old man, was left with serious injuries, sparking a police investigation that would lead to Caruana’s arrest a few days later.

Witnesses recalled the scene, with one local resident telling Hot Malta, “It was like a bomb went off. We couldn’t believe something like this could happen here.” The once-peaceful street became a hub of police activity, with forensic teams scouring the area for evidence.

Caruana’s Trial: A Tale of Heated Argument and Gunplay

During the trial, the court heard how a heated argument between Caruana and the victim escalated rapidly. Caruana, in a moment of anger, retrieved a gun from his home and fired at the victim, striking him in the leg. The victim was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he underwent surgery and thankfully made a full recovery.

Caruana, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial, was ultimately found guilty by a jury. Today, Judge Joseph Mifsud sentenced him to five years in prison, with a further three years suspended.

Community Reacts: Safety Concerns and Sympathy

News of the sentence has sparked mixed reactions in Marsascala. While many residents are relieved that justice has been served, there are also concerns about the safety of the community. “We never thought something like this could happen here,” said a long-time resident. “It’s made us all a bit more cautious.”

Others, however, expressed sympathy for Caruana and his family. “Five years is a long time,” said one local shopkeeper. “I hope he uses this time to reflect and change his ways.”

Caruana, when asked if he had any final words, simply said, “I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen.”
