Gaza Activists Arrive in Turkey After Israel Deportation
Gaza Activists Touch Down in Turkey: A Tale of Defiance and Deportation
Malta, 2021 – The Mediterranean sun was setting as the first group of Gaza flotilla activists arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, after being deported from Israel. Among them was Maltese national, Daniel Zammit, who had been part of the ‘Freedom Waves’ flotilla attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.
From the Mediterranean to the Bosphorus
The journey of these activists is a testament to their unyielding spirit. They set sail from Malta and Greece, carrying humanitarian aid and a message of solidarity with the people of Gaza. Their path was blocked by the Israeli navy, leading to a tense standoff and eventual deportation. Now, they find themselves in Turkey, their journey far from over.
Zammit, a seasoned activist from the Maltese town of Żabbar, spoke to Hot Malta from Istanbul. “We won’t be silenced,” he said, “Our message is clear: the blockade of Gaza must end.”
Malta’s Role in the Flotilla
Malta has been a significant point of departure for Gaza flotillas in the past. The island’s strategic location and pro-Palestinian sentiment among some segments of the population have made it a natural starting point for such initiatives. The Maltese government, however, has distanced itself from these activities, stating that it does not support actions that could escalate tensions in the region.
Despite this, Maltese civil society has been vocal in its support of the flotilla’s objectives. “We believe in the right to freedom of navigation and the right to challenge injustice,” said Michael Degiorgio, a spokesperson for the Maltese solidarity network with Palestine.
What’s Next?
The deported activists are now regrouping in Turkey, discussing their next steps. Some have hinted at plans to continue their journey to Gaza, while others are considering legal action against their deportation. Zammit, for one, is determined to continue the fight. “We won’t let this setback deter us. We’ll find a way to reach Gaza and deliver our message,” he said.
Back in Malta, Degiorgio echoed this sentiment. “We stand in solidarity with the activists. We’ll continue to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza and support efforts to end the blockade.”
As the sun sets on another day in the long-running Gaza conflict, the activists’ journey serves as a reminder that defiance, though often met with resistance, can still be a powerful force.
