Gaza Activists Arrive in Turkey After Israel Deportation
Gaza Activists Touch Down in Turkey, Malta’s Solidarity Echoes
In the early hours of Tuesday, a group of activists, including Maltese nationals, arrived in Istanbul after being deported from Israel. They were part of the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The scene at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport was one of relief and exhaustion, as the activists, many bearing the effects of their detention, were greeted by supporters.
From Gaza to Malta: A Journey of Solidarity
Among the activists was Maltese national, Claire Borg, a social worker from Birkirkara. She had joined the flotilla to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. “I saw this as an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza,” she said, before her deportation. Back in Malta, support for the activists was evident. The Malta Palestine Solidarity Committee had organized a protest in front of the Israeli Embassy in Floriana, with participants holding banners and chanting slogans.
Malta’s Role in the Flotilla
Malta’s involvement in the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ was significant. The Maltese-flagged ‘Zaytouna-Oliva’, a 27-meter long catamaran, was one of the ships in the convoy. The ship, based in Marsamxett Harbour, was loaded with humanitarian aid and supplies. Despite its seizure by Israeli forces, the Maltese government maintained a firm stance, stating that the ship’s crew and passengers were acting in accordance with international law.
: The Struggle Continues
The activists’ deportation marks a setback for the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ initiative, but it does not spell the end of the struggle. As Claire Borg put it, “We may have been stopped, but the cause remains. We will continue to raise our voices until the blockade is lifted and justice is served.” Back in Malta, the Palestine Solidarity Committee has already started planning their next move, with a focus on raising awareness and pressuring the government to take a stronger stance.
As the activists in Turkey prepare to return home, the spirit of solidarity in Malta remains undeterred. The struggle for Gaza continues, both on the high seas and in the hearts of those who refuse to remain silent.
