Gaza Flotilla Activists Arrive in Turkey After Israel Deportation
Gaza Flotilla Activists Touch Down in Turkey, Malta’s Solidarity Echoes
In the early hours of Tuesday, a plane carrying 15 activists from the Freedom Flotilla II, including Maltese national, Alfred Zammit, touched down in Istanbul. They had been deported from Israel after their attempt to break the Gaza blockade was thwarted. The activists, who had set sail from Greece, were intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, sparking international outcry.
Malta’s Solidarity: From Valletta to Istanbul
Malta’s solidarity with the Gaza flotilla was evident even before the activists’ departure. The Maltese government, while maintaining diplomatic ties with Israel, expressed its support for the flotilla’s humanitarian mission. Alfred Zammit, a Maltese activist, had set sail from the port of Valletta, his journey mirroring the solidarity felt across the island nation.
Back home, Maltese citizens and NGOs held vigils and protests, their voices echoing through the streets of Valletta, Rabat, and other towns. The Maltese Council for Foreign Relations and the Maltese section of the International Committee of the Red Cross were among those voicing their support for the flotilla’s cause.
Turkey: A Haven for the Activists
The activists’ arrival in Turkey was met with a warm welcome. Turkish authorities, who have been vocal critics of Israel’s Gaza policies, facilitated their entry. The activists were greeted by Turkish officials, activists, and supporters at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
Alfred Zammit, speaking to local media, expressed his gratitude to the Turkish government and people for their support. “Turkey has shown the world that it stands for justice and human rights,” he said, his voice echoing the sentiment of many Maltese who have been following the flotilla’s journey.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, reiterated his country’s stance on the Gaza issue, stating, “We will continue to support the Palestinian people until they gain their legitimate rights and the blockade on Gaza is lifted.”
: The Struggle Continues
The activists’ arrival in Turkey marks a new chapter in the ongoing struggle for Gaza’s freedom. While the immediate mission may have been thwarted, the cause remains undeterred. Alfred Zammit, speaking from Istanbul, vowed that the struggle would continue, “We will not rest until Gaza is free.”
Back in Malta, the Maltese government has been urged to continue its diplomatic efforts to lift the Gaza blockade. Local NGOs are planning further protests and awareness campaigns, determined to keep the issue in the spotlight.
