Gaza Flotilla Activists Arrive in Turkey After Israel Deportation

Gaza Flotilla Activists Touch Down in Turkey, Malta’s Solidarity Echoes

In the early hours of Tuesday, a group of activists, including some Maltese, arrived in Istanbul after being deported from Israel. They were part of the Freedom Flotilla, an international mission aiming to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The activists’ journey, filled with drama and determination, has sparked conversations and solidarity here in Malta.

From Tel Aviv to Istanbul: A Journey Cut Short

The Freedom Flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid and carrying the voices of Gaza’s people, was intercepted by Israeli forces on Monday. The activists, including Maltese citizens, were detained and later deported. Among them was Maltese journalist and activist, Carmel Baldacchino, who described the scene as tense but peaceful.

“We were on our way to Gaza to deliver much-needed supplies,” Baldacchino said, “but we were stopped, our boat seized, and we were sent away.”

Malta’s Solidarity: From Social Media to Street Art

Back in Malta, the news of the activists’ detention and deportation sparked outrage and solidarity. Social media platforms buzzed with support, with many using the hashtag #FreeTheFlotilla. Local NGOs, including Maltese NGO, SOS Malta, condemned the Israeli action, calling it a violation of international law.

In Valletta, street artists quickly responded, painting murals in support of the activists. One, near the Mediterranean Conference Centre, depicts a boat trying to break through a barrier, with the words “Free Gaza” written in bold letters.

The activists, now in Turkey, are regrouping and planning their next move. They’ve vowed to continue their mission, with some suggesting they might try to reach Gaza by land. Back in Malta, the solidarity continues, with more protests and fundraisers planned.

Baldacchino, speaking from Istanbul, was defiant. “This isn’t over. We’ll find a way to get the aid to Gaza, one way or another.”

As the activists prepare for their next move, one thing is clear: the spirit of solidarity is strong, both in Turkey and here in Malta.
