Grech Challenges Caruana on Gov’t Costs

‘Where’s your calculator?’ Delia challenges Finance Minister on government costs

In a feisty exchange at yesterday’s parliamentary session, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech pulled out a calculator mid-debate, questioning Finance Minister Clyde Caruana about the government’s spending. Grech’s impromptu math lesson, held up at the House of Representatives in Valletta, has sparked a flurry of discussions across Malta.

Grech’s Calculated Move

Grech challenged Caruana on the government’s projected deficit, which stands at €1.2 billion for 2022. He argued that when adjusted for inflation and population growth, the deficit is actually higher. “Where’s your calculator, Minister?” Grech quipped, brandishing his own.

Grech presented his own figures, claiming the adjusted deficit is closer to €1.6 billion. He accused the government of hiding behind statistical tricks to make the deficit seem smaller. “The people of Malta deserve to know the truth about our financial situation,” Grech insisted.

Caruana’s Response

Caruana, however, was quick to defend the government’s fiscal policy. He maintained that the projected deficit is accurate and in line with EU standards. He dismissed Grech’s adjusted figures as “political propaganda”.

“The Opposition is trying to create fear and uncertainty,” Caruana retorted. “Our economic policies are working. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU, and our economy is growing.”

Economists Weigh In

Economists have been quick to weigh in on the debate. Dr. Joseph Farrugia, an economist at the University of Malta, told Hot Malta, “Grech has a point. When you adjust for inflation and population growth, the deficit does look worse. But it’s important to consider the whole economic picture, not just one figure.”

On the other hand, Dr. Gordon Cordina, an economist at the Malta Development Bank, supported Caruana’s stance. “The government’s fiscal policy is sustainable. We’re seeing growth, and that’s what matters.”

Meanwhile, social media has been abuzz with Malta’s taxpayers, many of whom are calling for more transparency in government spending. “I want to see where my money is going,” said one Facebook user. “If Grech’s figures are right, then we’re in trouble,” commented another.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Malta’s taxpayers are eager for more clarity on the government’s spending. Whether you’re Team Grech or Team Caruana, one thing we can all agree on is that every cent counts.

So, where’s your calculator, Malta?
