Gżira Man Hospitalised After 3-Storey Fall
Gżira Balcony Fall: Man Hospitalised, Community in Shock
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening, after a man plummeted three storeys from a balcony, landing with a thud on the concrete below. The incident, which occurred around 8 pm, through the usually quiet residential area, leaving neighbours shaken and concerned.
Resident’s Descent Halted by Car
The man, in his late thirties, was found lying motionless near a parked car, which fortunately broke his fall. The vehicle’s owner, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “I heard a loud crash and saw him lying there. It’s a miracle my car was there; it could have been much worse.”
Hospitalised in Serious Condition
The victim was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. Doctors are assessing his injuries, which include multiple fractures and internal bleeding. The man’s family has been notified and is by his side, according to sources close to the situation.
Police Investigate Cause of Fall
Gżira police have launched an investigation into the incident. While initial reports suggest it may have been an accident, no definitive conclusions have been drawn. Forensic experts are examining the balcony and the man’s apartment for clues. Superintendent Joseph Mercieca, leading the investigation, stated, “We are treating all possibilities, including foul play, until we have concrete evidence.”
Neighbours described the man as quiet and keeping to himself. “He moved in a few months ago,” said one neighbour. “Kept himself to himself, but always polite when we passed in the corridor.”
Community Support and Safety Concerns
Residents have rallied around the man and his family, offering support and well-wishes. However, the incident has also raised safety concerns among residents. “We’ve been asking for better safety measures around here for years,” said another neighbour. “Hopefully, this will finally push the landlord and the council to do something.”
In response to the incident, the Gżira Local Council has promised to review safety measures in the area. Council President, Dr. Daniel Borg, stated, “Our thoughts are with the man and his family. We will be looking into what more we can do to ensure the safety of our residents.”
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the man’s fall has left the close-knit Gżira community reeling, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of safety in our homes.
We wish the man a swift and full recovery and extend our sympathies to his family during this difficult time.
