Malta Offers Free Hydrotherapy for Disability Card Holders

Unlocking Wellness: Free Hydrotherapy for Malta’s Disability Card Holders

Imagine the soothing embrace of warm water, gently caressing your muscles, easing tension, and invigorating your senses. Now, picture this experience being accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial circumstances. This is not a dream, but a reality thanks to Malta’s recent initiative.

A New Wave of Wellness

Tucked away in the heart of Msida, the National Hydrotherapy Centre has been a beacon of wellness for many. However, until recently, its services were not universally accessible. That changed when the government announced free hydrotherapy sessions for holders of the Malta Disability Information and Accessibility Services (MDIAS) card.

This move, effective since January 2023, has opened up a world of therapeutic benefits to a wider community. Hydrotherapy, with its low-impact exercises and buoyancy assistance, is particularly beneficial for individuals with mobility issues, chronic pain, or neurological conditions.

How It Works

If you’re a cardholder, you’re entitled to a free 30-minute hydrotherapy session per week. All you need to do is book your slot at the National Hydrotherapy Centre. The sessions are led by trained physiotherapists who tailor the exercises to your specific needs and abilities.

But what if you’re not a cardholder? Don’t worry, you can still benefit from this initiative. If you believe you qualify for the MDIAS card, you can apply online through the Malta Council for the Disabled’s website. The process is straightforward, and the benefits extend beyond free hydrotherapy sessions.

A Community Effort

This initiative is not just about free sessions; it’s about inclusivity and community. It’s about ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to lead healthier, happier lives. It’s about breaking down barriers and fostering a more supportive society.

Hot Malta caught up with Dr. Maria Mifsud, a physiotherapist at the National Hydrotherapy Centre. She shared, “We’ve seen an increase in attendance since the initiative started. It’s heartening to see more people benefiting from hydrotherapy, and we’re committed to making this experience as positive and beneficial as possible.”

So, whether you’re a cardholder or not, if you think hydrotherapy could benefit you or someone you know, don’t hesitate to reach out. The National Hydrotherapy Centre is here, ready to welcome you into its warm, healing waters.
