Malta Tops EU Growth Forecast: Abela Hails ‘Best in Class’ Performance

Abela’s Praise: Malta Tops EU Growth Forecast

Standing before the grand facade of the Auberge de Castille, Prime Minister Robert Abela beamed with pride as he announced, “Malta is the best in class.” He wasn’t boasting about our traditional Maltese pastizzi or the stunning Azure Window (now a window of opportunity for divers), but rather, our economic prowess. The EU has just released its growth forecasts, and Malta has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in the bloc.

Malta’s Economic Prowess

According to the EU’s Spring Economic Forecasts, Malta’s economy is expected to grow by 6.6% this year. This is a significant leap from the 7.7% growth we experienced in 2021, which was one of the highest in the EU. Abela, addressing a press conference at the historic Castille Square, hailed this as a testament to Malta’s resilience and economic management.

But what’s driving this growth? Malta’s strong financial services sector, coupled with a strong construction industry, is playing a significant role. The iGaming sector, with its headquarters in the bustling Msida area, is also contributing significantly to our economic success story.

Jobs and Investment

Malta’s economic growth is not just about numbers on a page; it’s about people. Unemployment has dropped to a record low of 3.5%, with more jobs being created across various sectors. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure projects, like the upcoming Smart City in Tigné, which is expected to create thousands of jobs and attract more foreign direct investment.

Abela also highlighted the government’s commitment to sustainable growth. He stressed the importance of green energy projects, such as the Delimara power station’s conversion to run on natural gas, and the upcoming solar farm in Marsaxlokk. These projects, he said, will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create new opportunities in the green economy.

Challenges Ahead

While Malta is basking in the glow of these impressive growth figures, Abela was quick to acknowledge the challenges ahead. He warned about the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on energy prices and supply chains. He also emphasized the need to diversify our economy, reduce our dependence on foreign workers, and invest in education and training to equip Maltese citizens with the skills of the future.

As Abela concluded his press conference, the historic clock tower of the Auberge de Castille chimed in the background, a reminder of Malta’s rich history and its journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
