Malta’s Alex Borg Conquers Everest

Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: A Peek into Alex Borg’s Everest Journey

Imagine standing at 8,848.86 meters above sea level, the world at your feet, the air thin and cold, and the flag of Malta fluttering in the wind. This was the reality for Maltese mountaineer Alex Borg on May 16, 2023, when he became the first Maltese national to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

From the Islands to the Roof of the World

Alex’s journey to Everest began not on the frozen slopes of the Himalayas, but in the warm, sunny streets of Malta. A seasoned mountaineer with over 20 years of experience, Alex has scaled peaks across Europe and Africa. But Everest, the highest peak in the world, was the ultimate challenge. “I’ve always been drawn to the big mountains,” Alex told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “Everest was the next logical step.”

Alex’s training regime was as intense as the mountain he was preparing to climb. He spent months hiking up and down the rugged terrain of the Maltese islands, carrying heavy packs, and even training in an altitude chamber in Switzerland. “Malta might not have the highest peaks, but it has its own challenges,” Alex said, referring to the island’s steep cliffs and rocky terrain.

An Uphill Battle

Everest, however, was a different beast altogether. Alex’s expedition lasted over two months, battling harsh weather conditions, altitude sickness, and the physical exhaustion that comes with climbing the world’s highest peak. He faced temperatures as low as -30°C, winds that could blow a grown man off his feet, and the constant threat of avalanches and icefalls.

But Alex was not alone. He was part of a team of international climbers, each with their own stories and motivations. Together, they supported each other through the toughest times. “It’s not just about physical strength,” Alex said. “It’s about mental resilience and teamwork.”

Planting the Maltese Flag

On May 16, after weeks of climbing and waiting for the right weather window, Alex and his team made their final push to the summit. They left their camp at 8,300 meters in the early hours of the morning, climbing through the night to reach the top by sunrise.

“When I saw the Maltese flag at the summit, it was an incredible feeling,” Alex recalled. “All the hard work, all the sacrifices, they all came together in that moment. It was worth it.”

Alex’s achievement is not just a personal triumph, but a national one. He has put Malta on the mountaineering map, proving that even from our small islands, we can reach the highest heights.

As Alex said, “Malta is a country of dreamers and doers. We might be small, but we have big dreams. Everest is just the beginning.”
