Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: First Maltese to Summit Everest
Malta’s Mountain Conqueror: Meet the First Maltese Mountaineer to Reach Everest’s Peak
Imagine standing at 8,848.86 meters above sea level, gazing out at a world that seems to stretch infinitely beneath you. This is not a dream, but a reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alexey Lobanov, who recently became the first Maltese national to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
From the Mediterranean to the Roof of the World
Lobanov, a 42-year-old Russian-born Maltese citizen, embarked on this monumental journey from his home in Msida, Malta. The contrast between the tiny Mediterranean island and the towering peaks of the Himalayas is stark, but Lobanov’s passion for mountaineering has always bridged this gap. “I’ve always been drawn to the challenge and the beauty of high mountains,” he says.
Lobanov’s journey to Everest began in 2015 when he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Since then, he has scaled numerous peaks across Europe and Asia, including Mount Elbrus and Mount Aconcagua. However, Everest, the highest peak in the world, has always been his ultimate goal.
Training and Preparation in Malta
Malta may not have the highest peaks, but it provided Lobanov with the perfect training ground. He spent countless hours hiking and running along the rugged coastlines of Dingli Cliffs and the Dingli Nature Reserve. He also trained indoors at local gyms, including the ones in Paceville and Birkirkara.
Lobanov’s preparation was not just physical. He also underwent extensive medical checks at Mater Dei Hospital to ensure he was fit for the challenge. “The doctors were amazed at my physical condition,” he says, “but they also emphasized the importance of mental strength for such a climb.”
Summiting Everest: A Malta Moment
Lobanov’s Everest expedition began in Lukla, Nepal, in March 2023. After weeks of trekking through the Khumbu region, he reached Base Camp on April 12. The climb to the summit was a grueling test of endurance and willpower, but Lobanov persevered.
On May 16, at 8:45 AM local time, Lobanov stood on the summit of Mount Everest. He unfurled a Maltese flag, a moment he had been dreaming of for years. “It was an incredible feeling,” he recalls, “to represent my home country at the top of the world.”
Lobanov’s achievement is not just a personal triumph, but a moment of pride for Malta. It underscores the potential of Maltese individuals when they set their sights high and work tirelessly to achieve their goals.
: Inspiring the Next Generation
Now back in Malta, Lobanov is already . He plans to share his experiences with students and young mountaineers, inspiring them to push their limits and pursue their dreams. He is also working on a book about his Everest expedition, set to be published later this year.
“I want to show people that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible,” Lobanov says. “Whether it’s climbing Everest or achieving something closer to home, the journey is just as important as the destination.”
Lobanov’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the spirit of adventure. It reminds us that while we may come from a small island, our dreams can reach great heights.
