Malta’s Skies: No Longer Just for Birds and Planes
Malta’s Skies: No Longer Just for Birds and Planes
Ever looked up at the night sky from the bustling streets of Valletta and wondered, “Why can’t that be me up there?” Well, thanks to a growing community of skydivers and a new breed of aviation enthusiasts, that dream is becoming a reality for more Maltese than ever before.
Malta’s Skydiving Scene: Taking Off
Tucked away in the quiet town of Żurrieq, you’ll find the humble beginnings of Malta’s skydiving scene. Here, at the Skydive Malta drop zone, the island’s skies are buzzing with activity. On any given weekend, you’ll see planes taking off from the nearby Ħal Far Airfield, carrying thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies ready to leap into the void.
Meet Mark Attard, a local skydiving instructor who’s seen the sport grow exponentially in Malta. “When I started, there were maybe 200 jumps a year,” he recalls. “Now, we’re looking at over 10,000.” The reasons? Affordability, accessibility, and a growing sense of adventure among Maltese.
From the Ground Up: Malta’s Aviation Renaissance
It’s not just about jumping out of planes anymore. Malta’s aviation scene is booming, with a new generation of pilots taking to the skies. Luke Borg, a young Maltese pilot, is part of this wave. “I remember as a kid, looking out at the airport and dreaming of being up there,” he says. “Now, I’m living that dream, and I’m not alone.”
Malta’s aviation schools, like the Malta Aviation Training Centre, are seeing record numbers. With affordable training options and a supportive community, more Maltese are taking control of their own skies.
: Malta’s Skies, Our Future
As Malta continues to invest in its aviation infrastructure, the future looks bright for those who dare to reach for the skies. The government’s plans to expand Ħal Far Airfield and develop a new aviation academy in Ħal Far promise to create more opportunities for Maltese to take flight.
So, the next time you look up at the night sky from the streets of Valletta, remember, that could be you up there. And with the way Malta’s aviation scene is taking off, it just might be.
