Malta’s Skyrocketing Love for Hot Air Balloons

The Sky Within Reach: Malta’s Growing Love Affair with Hot Air Balloons

Picture this: The sun begins to rise over the azure Mediterranean, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Suddenly, a vibrant splash of colour appears, floating gently against the morning breeze. It’s not a bird, not a plane, but a hot air balloon, silently gliding over the Maltese islands. This isn’t a scene from a dream, but a reality that’s becoming increasingly common in our skies.

A Ballooning Boom in the Mediterranean

Malta, with its mild climate and stunning landscapes, is fast becoming a hotspot for hot air ballooning. The sport, once a niche activity, is now gaining traction among locals and tourists alike. According to the Malta Ballooning Club, the number of balloon flights has doubled in the past five years, with an average of 300 flights taking off annually from sites like Ta’ Qali and Siggiewi.

“We’ve seen a significant increase in interest, both from Maltese residents and tourists,” says Mark Xuereb, a veteran balloon pilot and founder of Malta Ballooning. “People are realizing that there’s more to Malta than just beaches and historical sites. They want to see the islands from a different perspective.”

The Art of Ballooning: A Local Perspective

Mark, a native of Msida, took up ballooning in the late 1990s. He’s seen the sport evolve from a handful of enthusiasts to a thriving community. “It’s not just about the flight,” he explains. “It’s about the camaraderie, the shared love for the sport, and the joy of seeing people’s faces light up when they see Malta from the sky.”

Local pilots like Mark are not just passionate about ballooning; they’re also committed to promoting safety and responsible flying. The Malta Civil Aviation Authority (MCA) regulates balloon flights, ensuring that pilots adhere to strict safety guidelines. “Safety is our top priority,” Mark asserts. “We follow all the rules, and we make sure our passengers do too.”

Ballooning Beyond the Islands

While Malta offers a unique perspective with its historic sites and coastal views, the sister islands of Gozo and Comino are also gaining popularity among balloonists. The quieter, greener landscapes provide a different kind of beauty, and the lack of air traffic control restrictions makes for more flexible flight times.

“Gozo is a hidden gem for ballooning,” says Marie Claire Aquilina, a Gozitan pilot and member of the Malta Ballooning Club. “The views are breathtaking, and the people are always so welcoming. It’s a joy to share my island with visitors from all over the world.”

Marie Claire’s words highlight another aspect of Malta’s ballooning scene: its role in promoting tourism. Balloon flights offer a unique selling point for the islands, attracting visitors seeking a different kind of adventure.

“We’ve had people from all walks of life, from all over the world,” Mark recalls. “From families celebrating birthdays to couples on their honeymoons, everyone has a story to tell, and we’re happy to be a part of their Maltese adventure.”

Getting Involved: From Passenger to Pilot

For those interested in experiencing a hot air balloon flight, several local companies offer passenger flights. Prices vary, but they typically include a pre-flight briefing, the balloon flight itself, and a post-flight celebration with champagne (or orange juice for non-drinkers).

But what if you want to do more than just fly? Both the Malta Ballooning Club and the Hot Air Balloon Club of Malta welcome new members. Training to become a licensed pilot involves both ground school and practical flight training, but it’s an achievable goal for anyone with a passion for the sport.

“It’s not just about learning to fly,” Marie Claire explains. “It’s about becoming part of a community, a family. We support each other, learn from each other, and grow together.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned balloonist or a first-time flyer, Malta’s skies are waiting. The sun is rising, the balloons are ready, and the adventure is just beginning. Are you ready to reach for the sky?
