Maltese Mountaineer Conquers Everest

Malta’s Mountaineering Pioneer: The Summit of Everest

Imagine standing at the highest point on Earth, the air thin, the wind howling, and the world stretching out beneath you in a breathtaking panorama. This is not a scene from a movie or a dream, but the reality for Maltese mountaineer, Alex Borg, who recently conquered Mount Everest.

From the Streets of Malta to the Roof of the World

Alex, a 37-year-old engineer from Msida, has been climbing since he was a teenager. He cut his teeth on the cliffs of Dingli, the rugged coastline of Gozo, and the challenging terrain of Comino. But Everest was always his ultimate goal. “I’ve always been drawn to the big mountains,” he says, “and Everest is the biggest of them all.”

Alex’s journey to the summit was a grueling test of physical endurance and mental resilience. It took him five weeks to reach the top, climbing through treacherous icefalls, battling extreme temperatures, and enduring weeks of isolation at high altitude. But for Alex, the challenge was not just physical. It was also a test of his commitment to his home country.

Carrying Malta’s Flag to the Top

Alex carried the Maltese flag with him all the way to the summit. “I wanted to show that Maltese people can achieve great things,” he says. “We’re a small country, but we have big hearts and big dreams.” His achievement has inspired a wave of national pride, with people across Malta cheering him on and celebrating his success.

Alex’s climb also raised funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund, a charity that supports vulnerable people in Malta. “I wanted to use my climb to give back to my community,” he says. “I’m proud to have raised money for such a worthy cause.”

Bringing Everest Home

Now that Alex is back in Malta, he’s been sharing his experiences with anyone who’ll listen. He’s given talks at schools, met with politicians, and even led a guided hike up to the summit of Ta’ Cenc in Gozo. “I want to inspire more Maltese people to get out there and challenge themselves,” he says. “We have some incredible landscapes here in Malta. You don’t need to go to Everest to find adventure.”

Alex’s next challenge? He’s already set his sights on another of the world’s highest peaks. But for now, he’s content to be back home in Malta, sharing his stories and inspiring the next generation of adventurers.

“I’ve climbed the highest mountain in the world,” he says with a smile. “But there’s no place like home.”
