Man Hospitalised After 3-Storey Gżira Balcony Fall
Gżira Balcony Plunge: Man Hospitalised After Three-Storey Fall
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening after a man tumbled three storeys from a balcony, landing with a thud on the concrete below. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 PM at a residential block on Triq San Ġorġ, left the man, believed to be in his late 20s, with serious injuries.
Residents Recall the Moment
Neighbours recounted the harrowing moment when they heard the man’s cries for help. “I was in my kitchen when I heard a loud thud,” said Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw him lying there, motionless. It was terrifying.”
Swift Response from Emergency Services
The Malta Police Force and Civil Protection Department arrived swiftly at the scene, cordoning off the area while paramedics tended to the injured man. He was then rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in stable but serious condition.
Superintendent Keith Micallef, who was present at the scene, confirmed that the man had fallen from a third-floor balcony. “We are still investigating the cause of the fall,” he said. “At this stage, we cannot rule out any possibilities.”
Balcony Safety in Malta’s High-Rise Residential Areas
This incident raises questions about balcony safety in Malta’s high-rise residential areas, particularly in Gżira, which has seen a surge in apartment blocks in recent years. While many buildings have safety measures in place, such as barriers and railings, some residents have raised concerns about their effectiveness.
“I’ve seen kids climbing on balconies, and it’s only a matter of time before something serious happens,” said another Gżira resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We need stricter regulations and better enforcement.”
Hot Malta reached out to the Malta Developers Association for comment, but they had not responded at the time of publication.
In the meantime, the man’s family has asked for privacy as they await further updates on his condition.
