Marsascala Shooting Verdict: Man Cleared of Attempted Murder
In a dramatic turn of events, a man has been acquitted of attempted murder charges following a 2019 shooting incident in Marsascala. The jury’s verdict, delivered yesterday afternoon at the Criminal Court, has through the quiet fishing village, leaving residents and witnesses grappling with the outcome.
Revisiting the Night of the Shooting
On the evening of August 15, 2019, Marsascala’s usually tranquil Triq il-Kbira was shattered by the sound of gunshots. A man, now identified as the accused, allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals, leaving one man injured. The incident through the tight-knit community, with many residents locking their doors and watching in fear as emergency services flooded the street.
The accused, a 35-year-old man from Marsascala, was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with attempted murder, among other offenses. Yesterday, after a lengthy trial, a jury found him not guilty of the most serious charge, although he was convicted on lesser charges and sentenced to four years in prison.
Jury’s Deliberation: Reasonable Doubt
The jury’s decision to acquit the man of attempted murder was based on reasonable doubt, according to court sources. The prosecution had argued that the accused had intentionally fired at the group, while the defense maintained that the shooting was accidental, with the gun going off during a struggle. The jury, after deliberating for several hours, ultimately sided with the defense’s argument.
“The jury’s decision sends a clear message that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused intended to kill or cause serious injury,” said the accused’s lawyer, Dr. Joseph Giglio. “While my client is relieved that the most serious charge has been dropped, he understands that the community is still grappling with the aftermath of this incident.”
Marsascala: A Community Reeling
News of the verdict has left Marsascala residents divided. While some express relief that a man has been convicted for the incident, others question the jury’s decision to acquit on the attempted murder charge. “I understand that everyone is entitled to a fair trial, but I still can’t believe that someone could shoot at a group of people and not face the most serious charge,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.
The victim of the shooting, who has since recovered from his injuries, declined to comment on the verdict. His family, however, released a statement expressing their disappointment with the outcome. “While we respect the jury’s decision, we are disappointed that the person responsible for our loved one’s injuries will not face a more severe punishment,” the statement read.
The Marsascala Local Council has called for a community meeting to discuss the incident and its aftermath. “We understand that this verdict has stirred up a lot of emotions in our community,” said Council President, Mario Fava. “We want to provide a space for residents to come together, express their feelings, and discuss how we can move forward from this.”
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Marsascala Community Centre on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 pm.
