Minister Slams Construction Sector: ‘No Room for Shortcuts’

Safety First: Minister’s Stern Warning to Construction Sector

Picture this: a bustling construction site in Birkirkara, the heart of Malta’s industrial hub. Cranes tower over the skyline, trucks rumble along Triq San Pawl, and workers, clad in high-vis vests, buzz around like bees in a hive. Now, imagine the scene without the safety measures – no hard hats, no safety rails, no signs warning of hazards. It’s a chilling thought, but one that Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Owen Bonnici, wants to ensure remains just that – a thought.

Tough Talk from the Minister

Bonnici recently issued a stark reminder to the construction sector, stating, “There’s no room for shortcuts when it comes to health and safety.” Speaking at a conference in the Mediterranean Conference Centre, he stressed to safety regulations, saying, “We’re not just talking about rules here, we’re talking about lives.”

The minister’s words come amidst a spate of workplace accidents in Malta, with the construction industry accounting for a significant number of these incidents. According to the Health and Safety Authority, there were 135 reported accidents in the sector last year alone.

Local Initiatives Driving Change

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Local initiatives are driving change and promoting a culture of safety. The Health and Safety Authority’s ‘SafeStart’ campaign, for instance, is targeted at new workers, providing them with essential safety training. Meanwhile, the Malta Employers’ Association is working with employers to enhance safety measures and protocols.

On the ground, companies like HSBC Bank Malta are setting an example. Their construction site at Tigne’ Point, Sliema, is a model of safety best practice, with clear signage, regular safety briefings, and strict enforcement of safety protocols.

What Can You Do?

So, what can you do? If you’re a worker, speak up if you see something unsafe. If you’re an employer, invest in safety – it’s not just the right thing to do, it’s good business sense. And if you’re a concerned citizen, keep the pressure on. Let’s make sure that the construction sites of Malta are safe for everyone.

As Bonnici put it, “We’re building more than just structures. We’re building a safer Malta, one site at a time.”
