Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Collision: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida this morning after a motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a car. The incident, which occurred near the busy Msida roundabout, caused traffic chaos during the peak morning rush hour.
The Incident
The collision, reported at around 8:30 AM, saw the motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, sustain serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the car, a 45-year-old woman, was unharmed.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist lying on the road, with his bike badly damaged, as police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene. The Regional Road was partially closed, with traffic diverted through side streets, causing significant delays.
Police Investigation
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. A spokesperson for the Malta Police Force confirmed that a forensic examination of the scene was carried out, and both vehicles have been impounded for further inspection.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact the police on 119 or visit their nearest police station. The police have also reminded the public to drive carefully and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such incidents.
Road Safety in Malta
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved road safety in Malta. According to the National Statistics Office, there were 1,179 road traffic accidents in Malta in 2020, resulting in 19 fatalities and 268 serious injuries.
Road safety advocates have long called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, better road infrastructure, and increased public awareness campaigns. The government has pledged to invest in road safety initiatives, including the installation of more speed cameras and the implementation of a points system for traffic offenses.
In the meantime, the public is encouraged to do their part by driving carefully, adhering to speed limits, and always wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle.
“Every road user has a responsibility to ensure their actions don’t endanger others,” said Dr. Martin Balzan, a local road safety advocate. “We need to work together to make our roads safer for everyone.”
