Motorcyclist Hurt in Regional Road Collision
Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Crash: What We Know So Far
Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida this morning after a motorcyclist collided with a car, leaving the rider with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the Msida Church roundabout, caused traffic chaos during the morning rush hour.
The Incident
The collision happened around 8:30 AM when a 35-year-old man, riding a Yamaha motorbike, crashed into a Ford Fiesta driven by a 45-year-old woman. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist thrown off his bike and landing heavily on the road. The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious head injuries and was immediately taken to Mater Dei Hospital.
The driver of the car was unharmed but visibly shaken. She was administered first aid at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital for further checks. The Regional Road was closed for several hours while police investigated the cause of the crash.
Traffic Chaos
The incident caused long tailbacks along the Regional Road, with commuters facing delays of up to an hour. Traffic was diverted through side streets, causing congestion in areas not usually affected by morning rush hour traffic. Residents in Msida and Birkirkara took to social media to express their frustration at the delays.
Malta Public Transport announced that several bus routes were affected by the closure, with delays of up to 30 minutes reported. The company urged commuters to check their website for updates on affected routes.
Safety Concerns
This latest incident has once again raised concerns about safety on Malta’s roads. According to the Malta Police, there have been 17 motorcycle-related accidents so far this year, with three fatalities. Road safety campaigners have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better education for motorcyclists.
Dr. Alexia Pace, a road safety campaigner, said, “We need to see more enforcement of speed limits and helmet laws. Motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable road users, and we need to do more to protect them.”
Investigation Underway
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Road Safety Unit on 21320202. The police have also reminded motorists that the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited and can result in a €50 fine and three penalty points.
In a statement, the Malta Police said, “We urge all road users to exercise caution and respect the rules of the road. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.”
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, one thing is clear: today’s incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by motorcyclists on Malta’s roads. With the summer season approaching, road safety campaigners are calling on all road users to take extra care and look out for each other.
