Ta’ Qali’s Market Makeover: A New Era for Farmers and Foodies

Ever wandered through Ta’ Qali’s bustling market, dodging the occasional rogue chicken and wondering, ‘Could this be more… organized?’ Well, wonder no more. The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has plans to transform the Farmers’ Market into a sleek, modern food hub, set to open its doors in 2023.

From Farm to Fork: A New Vision

The revamped market, designed by local architect Richard England, aims to create a seamless, enjoyable experience for both vendors and visitors. It’s all about ‘farm to fork,’ says MTA CEO Johann Buttigieg. “We want to create a space that reflects the quality and diversity of Maltese produce, while also providing a platform for local food entrepreneurs.”

The new layout will feature a central square, surrounded by stalls arranged in a neat grid. No more haphazard alleyways or cramped corners. There’ll be plenty of seating, too, encouraging visitors to linger, chat, and savor the local flavors.

More Than Just a Market

But it’s not just about aesthetics. The revamped market will also include a food hub, a space dedicated to cooking classes, food-related events, and even a small restaurant serving local dishes. Think of it as a culinary campus, where you can learn, taste, and take home the best of Maltese cuisine.

And the cherry on top? A new building designed to house the Malta Culinary Academy. It’s all part of the MTA’s push to promote Malta as a gastronomic destination. “We want to put Maltese cuisine on the map,” says Buttigieg. “And what better way than to start at the source – our farmers and producers?”

What’s Next for Ta’ Qali?

Construction is set to begin in early 2022, with the market and food hub expected to open in late 2023. In the meantime, the MTA is working closely with vendors to ensure a smooth transition. “We want to support our existing vendors,” says Buttigieg. “After all, they’re the heart of the market.”

So, mark your calendars, foodies. Ta’ Qali’s about to get a whole lot tastier. And who knows? You might just find that rogue chicken enjoying its new, more organized home.
