‘Where’s your calculator?’ Delia challenges Finance Minister on government costs

Delia’s Calculating Challenge: “Where’s Your Calculator?”

Malta’s Opposition Leader, Bernard Grech, found himself in an unexpected math lesson yesterday as PN MP Simon Busuttil pulled out a calculator during a parliamentary session. The tool, usually reserved for solving complex equations, became a symbol of the Opposition’s attempt to scrutinize the government’s spending.

The Cost Conundrum

At the heart of the matter lies the government’s spending on various projects and initiatives. The Opposition argues that the government has been less than transparent about the costs involved. Grech, during a heated exchange, challenged Finance Minister Clyde Caruana to provide a detailed breakdown of the costs associated with several projects.

“Where’s your calculator, Minister?” Grech quipped, sparking laughter in the chamber. “We’re not asking for the moon. We’re simply asking for a detailed breakdown of the costs.”

Projects Under Scrutiny

The projects under scrutiny include the controversial Three Cities project, the extension of the Marsa Sports Complex, and the new hospital project in Gozo. The Opposition argues that the government has been vague about the costs, making it difficult to hold them accountable.

“We’re not opposed to development,” Busuttil said, “but we want to ensure that taxpayers’ money is being spent wisely. That’s why we’re asking for a detailed breakdown of the costs.”

The Government’s Response

The government, however, maintains that it has been transparent about its spending. Caruana retorted that the Opposition was merely playing politics with important national projects.

“We’ve provided detailed information about our spending,” Caruana said. “The Opposition is just trying to score cheap political points.”

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the government and the Opposition over the government’s spending. With a general election looming, both sides are keen to position themselves as the guardians of the taxpayer’s money.

As the parliamentary session ended, the calculator remained on the table, a silent witness to the political theater unfolding in Malta’s Parliament. The question on everyone’s mind now is: will the government rise to the challenge and provide the detailed breakdown the Opposition is demanding?
