‘Where’s your calculator?’ Delia challenges Finance Minister on government costs

Delia’s Math Challenge: “Where’s Your Calculator?”

In the cutthroat world of Maltese politics, a simple question can sometimes pack a punch. On Tuesday, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech found himself on the receiving end of such a query. “Where’s your calculator?” quipped Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, as the two faced off in Parliament.

The Budget Backdrop

The exchange took place during a debate on the government’s budget, a document that’s as thick as it is contentious. Caruana, presenting the budget, outlined a series of spending plans and tax cuts. Grech, however, was quick to question the figures, arguing that the government was being too optimistic about economic growth.

“The Finance Minister keeps telling us that the economy will grow by 6.5% next year,” Greach said, “But where’s the evidence for this? Where’s your calculator?”

Numbers Game

Caruana, unfazed, retorted that the Opposition was being too pessimistic. “They seem to think that the economy can’t grow,” he said, “But we’ve seen it happen before. We’ve seen growth rates of 7% and even 8% in the past.”

The Finance Minister also pointed to the government’s track record, noting that it had consistently met its growth targets. “We’ve delivered on our promises,” he said, “And we’ll continue to do so.”

The Street View

But what do the people of Malta make of all this? On Republic Street, the island’s bustling thoroughfare, opinions were divided. “I think the government’s being too optimistic,” said Maria, a shopkeeper. “I haven’t seen any sign of this growth they’re talking about.”

Her neighbor, however, was more optimistic. “I think they know what they’re doing,” said Joe, a retired engineer. “We’ve had good growth in the past, so why not now?”

Back in Parliament, the debate raged on. But one thing was clear: when it comes to the Maltese budget, everyone’s got an opinion. And everyone’s got a calculator.
