Żabbar Council Buys Hompesch Theatre to Save It from Developer’s Hammer

Żabbar’s Cultural Coup: Saving Hompesch Theatre from the Developer’s Hammer

Imagine, if you will, the grand old Hompesch Theatre standing tall and proud on Triq San Girgor in Żabbar, its once vibrant halls echoing with the laughter and applause of yesteryears. Now, picture it torn down, replaced by a towering block of flats. This was the grim reality Żabbar residents were facing, until their council stepped in and bought the theatre, saving it from the developer’s wrecking ball.

From Theatre Royal to Development’s Target

Built in 1865, the Hompesch Theatre, or ‘Teatru Rjal’ as it’s known locally, was once the heart of Żabbar’s cultural scene. It hosted everything from plays and operas to political rallies and community events. But like many historic buildings in Malta, time and neglect took their toll. The theatre fell into disrepair, and in 2019, it was sold to a developer with plans to turn it into residential units.

News of the sale through Żabbar. Residents feared losing a crucial piece of their cultural heritage. “It’s not just a building,” said Żabbar resident and local historian, Joseph Xuereb. “It’s a piece of our history, our identity. Losing it would be like losing a part of ourselves.”

Żabbar Council: The Unlikely Cultural Hero

Faced with this threat, Żabbar Local Council didn’t sit back and watch history crumble. Led by Mayor Dorian Cassar, they decided to take action. The council exercised their right of first refusal, buying the theatre for €1.5 million.

“We couldn’t stand by and let this happen,” Mayor Cassar told Hot Malta. “Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Żabbar’s rich cultural heritage. We had to save it, for our children and our children’s children.”

Reviving a Cultural Gem: The Road Ahead

Now that the theatre is safely in the council’s hands, the hard work begins. The building needs extensive restoration, estimated to cost around €3 million. But Żabbar’s council is undeterred. They’re exploring funding options, including EU grants and private sponsorships.

Once restored, the council plans to breathe new life into the theatre. They envision it as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting plays, concerts, and community events. “We want Hompesch Theatre to be a place where Żabbar’s cultural heritage is celebrated and preserved,” said Mayor Cassar.

Xuereb, the local historian, is optimistic about the future. “I’ve seen Żabbar’s spirit before. We’ve faced challenges, but we always come back stronger. With the council at the helm, I have no doubt Hompesch Theatre will rise again.”

So, the grand old theatre on Triq San Girgor stands tall once more, its future secured by the unlikely heroes of Żabbar Local Council. And as the restoration begins, so too does a new chapter in the story of Żabbar’s cultural heritage.
