Żabbar Council Buys Hompesch Theatre to Save It from Development
Żabbar’s Cultural Coup: Saving Hompesch Theatre from the Developer’s Hammer
Imagine this: the echo of laughter and applause fading into the night, the scent of freshly painted sets lingering in the air, and the grand Hompesch Theatre, standing silent and proud, a beacon of Żabbar’s cultural heritage. Now, picture it replaced by towering apartments, its history reduced to a mere footnote. This was the reality Żabbar council faced, until they decided to step in and save their town’s treasure.
From Theatre to Development Site: A Brief History
The Hompesch Theatre, a stunning example of Maltese Baroque architecture, has been a staple of Żabbar’s cultural scene since 1893. Built by the Knights of St. John, it was once the town’s main social hub, hosting everything from opera performances to political rallies. But as Żabbar grew, so did the pressure for development. In 2021, the theatre was sold to a private developer, who planned to replace it with a block of flats.
Żabbar Council’s Cultural Intervention
Żabbar council, however, wasn’t ready to let their town’s history be erased. Led by Mayor Dorian Camilleri, they stepped in, buying the theatre back for €2.5 million. “We couldn’t stand by and watch our cultural heritage be bulldozed,” Camilleri told Hot Malta. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building; it’s a piece of Żabbar’s identity.”
The council’s move was a bold one. It’s not every day a local council buys a historic theatre to save it from development. But Żabbar isn’t your average town. Nestled between the Grand Harbour and the picturesque Marsaxlokk Bay, it’s a place where history and culture run deep. From the ancient Roman Villa in Ħaġar Qim to the vibrant feasts honouring St. Catherine and St. Joseph, Żabbar’s cultural tapestry is as rich as it is diverse.
Revitalising a Heritage Gem
Now that the theatre is back in local hands, the council has big plans. They’re working on a €3 million restoration project, aiming to bring the theatre back to its former glory. The project includes repairing the roof, restoring the ornate interior, and updating the facilities to meet modern standards.
But it’s not just about preserving the past. The council also wants to revitalise the theatre, making it a vibrant cultural hub once again. They’re planning to host a variety of events, from classical music concerts to contemporary art exhibitions. “We want the Hompesch Theatre to be a place where everyone can come together, celebrate our culture, and create new memories,” Camilleri said.
The council’s vision is one that resonates with many Żabbar residents. “The theatre is part of our history, our identity,” said Maria, a lifelong Żabbar resident. “I’m so glad the council stepped in. It’s not just a theatre; it’s our heritage.”
: A Cultural Renaissance in Żabbar
The Hompesch Theatre isn’t the only historic building getting a new lease on life in Żabbar. The council is also working on restoring the ancient St. Catherine’s Church and turning the old Ħal Far military base into a public park. It’s all part of a broader plan to revitalise Żabbar’s cultural scene and attract more visitors to the town.
But the council isn’t just thinking about Żabbar. They’re also looking at how their actions can benefit Malta as a whole. “If we can save our cultural heritage, we can preserve Malta’s unique identity,” Camilleri said. “That’s something worth fighting for.”
As the sun sets over the Hompesch Theatre, casting a warm glow on its weathered stones, it’s clear that Żabbar’s cultural coup has only just begun. With the council’s vision and the community’s support, the theatre stands not as a relic of the past, but as a beacon of Żabbar’s cultural future.
