Żabbar Council Saves Hompesch Theatre from Demolition

Żabbar Council Steps In to Rescue Hompesch Theatre from Developer’s Clutches

Imagine the Hompesch Theatre, nestled in the heart of Żabbar, its grand façade echoing tales of yesteryears, suddenly facing the threat of bulldozers. This was the grim reality facing one of Malta’s cultural gems until Żabbar Local Council stepped in, purchasing the historic building to save it from potential development.

From Cultural Hub to Threatened Landmark

The Hompesch Theatre, located on Triq San Ġorġ Preca, has been a staple of Żabbar’s cultural scene since its inception in 1926. It has hosted countless plays, concerts, and community events, serving as a testament to the town’s rich history and vibrant arts community. However, in recent years, the theatre has faced neglect and disrepair, leading to its closure and leaving it vulnerable to developers.

Rumours began to circulate that the theatre was set to be demolished to make way for a residential development. The prospect of losing such an iconic landmark through Żabbar’s community, sparking a flurry of protests and petitions.

Żabbar Council: The Unlikely Hero

Amidst the uproar, Żabbar Local Council emerged as the unlikely hero, announcing its intention to purchase the theatre to prevent its demolition. The council, led by Mayor David Cassar, moved swiftly, negotiating with the owners and securing the necessary funds to finalise the purchase.

“We couldn’t stand by and watch our cultural heritage being destroyed,” Mayor Cassar told Hot Malta. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of Żabbar’s identity. We had to act, and act quickly, to save it.”

Revitalising a Cultural Gem

With the purchase complete, Żabbar Council is now turning its attention to restoring the theatre to its former glory. Plans are underway to renovate the building, updating its facilities while preserving its historic charm. The council is also exploring ways to involve the community in the theatre’s future, seeking ideas for events and activities that will once again make the Hompesch Theatre a thriving hub of cultural activity.

“This is just the beginning,” Mayor Cassar said. “We’ve saved the theatre, but now the real work starts. We want to hear from the community – what do you want to see at the Hompesch Theatre? What can we do to make it a space that truly reflects Żabbar’s spirit?”

Żabbar’s community has already begun to respond, with ideas ranging from art exhibitions to music festivals, all aimed at breathing new life into the historic theatre.
