Żabbar Council Saves Hompesch Theatre from Development

Żabbar’s Cultural Rescue: Council Acquires Hompesch Theatre

Imagine, if you will, the grand old Hompesch Theatre, standing tall and proud on Triq San Pawl in Żabbar, its once vibrant red and gold interior now faded, its stage silent. Now, picture it torn down, replaced by a towering block of apartments. This was the grim reality Żabbar residents and culture enthusiasts were facing, until their local council stepped in.

From Closure to Crisis

The Hompesch Theatre, a historic gem built in 1878, has been a staple of Żabbar’s cultural scene. It’s hosted everything from plays to concerts, even serving as a cinema in its heyday. But like many old theatres, it’s faced challenges. In 2019, it closed its doors, leaving Żabbar without a dedicated performance space. Then came the news that the building was up for sale, sparking fears of development.

Żabbar Council’s Cultural Intervention

Żabbar’s local council, led by Mayor Dorian Camilleri, wasn’t about to let that happen. They stepped in, acquiring the theatre in a deal worth €1.2 million. “We couldn’t stand by and watch our cultural heritage be lost to development,” Camilleri told Hot Malta. “The Hompesch Theatre is more than a building. It’s a piece of Żabbar’s history, a symbol of our community’s spirit.”

The council plans to restore the theatre to its former glory, creating a space that can once again host performances, community events, and even exhibitions. They’re also exploring ways to involve the local community in the project, from volunteering to fundraising.

Community Response and Future Plans

The news of the council’s intervention has been met with widespread relief and support. “We’ve had an outpouring of positivity,” Camilleri said. “People are excited to see the theatre restored, to see it once again become a hub of activity.”

But the council isn’t stopping at the theatre. They’re also looking at ways to revitalize the surrounding area, creating a cultural quarter that could attract visitors from across Malta. “We want to make Żabbar a destination,” Camilleri said. “A place where people can come to enjoy culture, to enjoy our unique identity.”

So, the Hompesch Theatre stands, its future secure, its stage ready to once again echo with the laughter and applause of Żabbar’s community. And as the council works to restore it, one thing is clear: Żabbar’s cultural spirit is far from silent.
