ADPD Threatens Legal Action Over Mellieħa Land Transfer

ADPD: ‘Reverse Course’ on Mellieħa Land Transfer or Face Legal Action

Imagine standing at the edge of Mellieħa Bay, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Now, picture a concrete jungle replacing that serene view. This is the reality the Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) fears, and they’re not going down without a fight. They’ve called on the government to reverse its decision to transfer public land in Mellieħa to a private developer, threatening legal action if their demands are not met.

From Public to Private: The Controversial Transfer

The government’s plans to transfer around 15,000 square metres of public land in Mellieħa to a private developer have sparked outrage among environmentalists and residents. The land, located near the Il-Majjistral nature reserve, is earmarked for a luxury development that includes villas, apartments, and a hotel.

ADPD, the political arm of Alternattiva Demokratika, argues that this transfer goes against the party’s longstanding commitment to protect Malta’s environment and heritage. They’ve slammed the government for prioritising private interests over public good, claiming that the transfer was approved without proper consultation or consideration of the environmental impact.

Legal Action Looms: ADPD’s Warning

ADPD has warned that if the government does not reverse its decision, they will not hesitate to take legal action. The party’s spokesperson, Carmel Cacopardo, stated, “We will explore all legal avenues to stop this transfer. We cannot stand idly by while our government sells off our public land and heritage to the highest bidder.”

Cacopardo also criticised the government’s lack of transparency, claiming that the transfer was approved behind closed doors, with no public consultation. He accused the government of “undermining democracy and the will of the people” by pushing through such decisions without proper scrutiny.

Residents and Environmentalists United

ADPD is not alone in its opposition to the land transfer. Residents of Mellieħa and environmentalists have united under the banner of Ħaħna għal-Mellieħa, a pressure group formed to protect the town’s environment and heritage. They’ve organised protests, collected signatures, and even launched a legal challenge against the transfer.

One resident, Maria Grech, expressed her frustration, “We moved to Mellieħa for its natural beauty. We don’t want to see it destroyed by greedy developers. We won’t let this happen without a fight.”

Environmental groups, such as BirdLife Malta and Din l-Art Ħelwa, have also weighed in, warning that the development could have devastating consequences for the local ecosystem and wildlife.

Government Stands Firm

Despite the mounting opposition, the government has stood firm in its decision to transfer the land. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance, which is overseeing the transfer, stated that the sale was necessary to raise funds for the government’s coffers.

The spokesperson argued that the development would bring significant economic benefits to Mellieħa, including job creation and increased tourism. They also dismissed claims of a lack of transparency, insisting that the transfer had been approved through the proper legal channels.

However, with ADPD threatening legal action and public opposition showing no signs of abating, the government may find it difficult to push through its plans without a fight.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to Hot Malta for updates on this controversial land transfer and the legal battle that could follow.
