ADPD Urges Govt: Reverse Mellieħa Land Transfer

ADPD: ‘Reverse Course’ on Mellieħa Land Transfer, Party Urges Government

Imagine standing at Mellieħa Bay, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. Now, picture a sprawling development, towering over the tranquil scene. This could become a reality, according to the Alternattiva Demokratika (ADPD), who are calling on the government to reverse its decision to transfer public land in Mellieħa to a private developer.

Land Transfer: A Brief Background

The government’s decision to transfer around 15,000 square meters of public land in Mellieħa to a private developer has sparked controversy. The land, situated near Mellieħa Bay, is currently used for agricultural purposes. The proposed transfer, part of a larger development project, has raised concerns among environmentalists and residents alike.

ADPD’s Stance: ‘Reverse Course’ and ‘Re-evaluate’

Alternattiva Demokratika (ADPD) has been vocal in its opposition to the land transfer. The party’s spokesperson, Michael Briguglio, has called on the government to ‘reverse course’ on the decision, arguing that the proposed development goes against the principles of sustainable development and the government’s own promises to protect Malta’s rural areas.

Briguglio stated, “This government promised to protect Malta’s rural areas and promote sustainable development. Yet, here we are, seeing public land being handed over to private developers for yet another concrete jungle. We urge the government to re-evaluate this decision and prioritize the long-term well-being of our communities and our environment.”

Community Concerns and Environmental Impact

The proposed development has raised several concerns among Mellieħa residents and environmentalists. Apart from the visual impact on the scenic bay, there are worries about increased traffic congestion, the loss of agricultural land, and the potential environmental damage to the surrounding area.

Environmental activist, Joe Cutajar, commented, “Mellieħa Bay is one of Malta’s last remaining stretches of untouched coastline. We cannot allow it to be paved over for profit. We stand with ADPD in calling on the government to reconsider this decision.”

: The Fight Continues

The battle over the Mellieħa land transfer is far from over. ADPD has vowed to continue pushing for a reversal of the decision, with Briguglio stating, “We will not stand idly by while our rural areas are sold off to the highest bidder. We urge the government to listen to the voice of the people and protect Malta’s precious landscapes.”

Meanwhile, the government has maintained that the proposed development will bring significant economic benefits to Mellieħa and the surrounding area. However, with public opinion firmly against the transfer, the government may face a tough battle ahead.
