ADPD Urges Govt: Save Mellieħa’s Green Lung
ADPD’s Call to Action: Save Mellieħa’s Green Lung
Imagine this: a lush, green expanse in the heart of Mellieħa, where children play, families picnic, and hikers explore. This isn’t a dream, but a reality under threat. The Alternattiva Demokratika (ADPD) is sounding the alarm, calling on the government to reverse its decision to transfer this precious land to the Mellieħa Local Council.
Mellieħa’s Green Lung: A Treasure Under Threat
Tucked away off Triq il-Kanċun, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Mellieħa Square, lies a 12,000 square metre plot of land. This isn’t just any land; it’s a vital green lung, a breathing space for the community and a haven for local flora and fauna. Yet, the government’s decision to transfer this land to the Mellieħa Local Council has raised eyebrows and concerns among environmentalists and residents alike.
ADPD’s spokesperson, Michael Briguglio, argues, “This land is a vital green space for Mellieħa. It’s a place where people can connect with nature, exercise, and relax. We’re calling on the government to reconsider this decision and protect this green lung for future generations.”
What’s at Stake?
The proposed transfer has sparked fears that the land could be developed, potentially leading to the loss of this green space forever. ADPD is warning that such a move would not only impact the environment but also the community’s well-being. Studies have shown that access to green spaces can reduce stress, improve mental health, and even boost physical health.
the land in question is home to several native plant species and serves as a habitat for local wildlife. Losing this green lung could lead to a decline in biodiversity, further threatening Malta’s already fragile ecosystem.
ADPD’s Call to Action
ADPD is urging the government to reconsider the transfer and instead explore alternative solutions. These could include maintaining the land as a public green space, or even declaring it a nature reserve to protect its unique ecosystem.
“We’re calling on the government to listen to the voice of the people,” Briguglio says. “We need to protect our green spaces, not pave them over. We urge everyone to join us in demanding that this land be saved for future generations.”
ADPD is planning a protest march in Mellieħa on Saturday, starting at 10 am from the square. All are welcome to join and show their support for saving Mellieħa’s green lung.
