The incident, which took place near the popular Triq il-Kbira (Main Street), sent residents into a panic.
The subsequent investigation led police to Carl Caruana, a 35-year-old Marsascala resident. Caruana was arrested and charged with attempted murder, among other offenses. Today, after a lengthy trial process, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Unraveling the Incident: A Web of Alleged Conspiracy
The court heard that Caruana, along with two other men, had allegedly planned the shooting as part of a conspiracy. The intended target, a 38-year-old man, was reportedly shot at close range, miraculously surviving the attack. The court found Caruana guilty of attempted murder, as well as other charges including possession of a firearm and criminal conspiracy.
During the trial, the court heard from witnesses who described the scene as chaotic and terrifying. “I was walking home from work when I heard the shots,” one witness told the court. “I saw a man fall to the ground, and then everything was chaos.”
Sentencing and the Road Ahead
In delivering the sentence, the judge noted the gravity of the crime and the impact it had on the community. “This was a brazen and violent act that struck at the heart of our community,” the judge said. “It sent a chill through Marsascala and served as a stark reminder that violence has no place in our society.”
Caruana, who showed no emotion as the sentence was read, will serve his time at the Corradino Correctional Facility. His co-accused are still awaiting trial.
