Festa Tfal: Celebrating Malta’s Children in Honour of St Anthony
Festa Tfal: A Celebration of St Anthony and Malta’s Little Ones
In the heart of Rabat, Malta, the sound of children’s laughter fills the air as the annual Festa Tfal in honour of St Anthony of Padua kicks off. This isn’t your average festa; it’s a joyous celebration dedicated to the patron saint of lost articles, but more importantly, to the little ones of our community.
What is Festa Tfal?
Festa Tfal, which translates to ‘Children’s Festa’, is a unique tradition held in various towns and villages across Malta. It’s a day set aside to honour St Anthony and to bless and celebrate the children of the community. The main event is a colourful procession where children, dressed in their Sunday best, carry statues of St Anthony and other saints through the streets, followed by their families and neighbours.
But Festa Tfal is more than just a procession. It’s a day filled with fun activities, games, and treats for the kids. It’s a time for families to come together, for neighbours to catch up, and for the community to celebrate its youngest members.
Rabat’s Festa Tfal: A Local Tradition
Rabat’s Festa Tfal is one of the most anticipated events in the local calendar. Held in the historic streets surrounding St Paul’s Cathedral, the festa brings the community together in a way that’s uniquely Maltese. The procession winds its way through the narrow, cobbled streets, past historic buildings, and under the arches of the ancient city gates.
This year, the festa promises a day filled with fun. There will be face painting, balloon animals, and games like ‘pass the parcel’ and ‘musical chairs’. The local band club will be out in force, playing marches that echo through the streets, and of course, there will be plenty of traditional Maltese sweets and treats on offer.
St Anthony: A Saint for All Seasons
St Anthony of Padua is a popular saint in Malta, known for his ability to find lost items. But he’s also the patron saint of lost souls, which makes him a fitting patron for our children. The festa is a reminder that our children are precious, and that we should cherish and protect them.
Father Joseph Borg, the parish priest of Rabat, explains, “Festa Tfal is a beautiful tradition that brings our community together. It’s a day to celebrate our children, to pray for their health and happiness, and to remind them that they are loved and cherished.”
Getting Involved
If you’re in Malta and want to experience the joy of Festa Tfal for yourself, Rabat’s festa is a great place to start. The procession begins at 4 pm on Sunday, followed by the activities and games in the square outside St Paul’s Cathedral. It’s a free event, open to all, so bring your kids, your neighbours, and your appetite for some traditional Maltese sweets!
And if you can’t make it to Rabat, don’t worry. Festa Tfal is held in many other towns and villages across Malta and Gozo. Check your local parish for details.
