In the heart of Rabat, Malta, the sound of laughter and the sweet aroma of fritters fill the air. It’s not just any day; it’s Festa Tfal, a vibrant celebration honouring St. Anthony of Padua, dedicated exclusively to the island’s little ones. But what makes this festa so special, and how did it all begin?

Festa Tfal, or ‘Children’s Feast’, is a unique twist on the traditional Maltese festa. While most feasts honour a patron saint, Festa Tfal pays homage to both St. Anthony of Padua and St. Joseph, the patron saint of workers. The idea was born in the 1950s when the parish priest of Rabat, Fr. Ġużè Aquilina, wanted to create a festa that would bring joy and fun to the children of the parish.

“Fr. Ġużè wanted to give children a day to remember, a day filled with games, sweets, and joy,” recalls Maria, a long-time Rabat resident. “He started the festa with just a few games and a small procession. Today, it’s one of the biggest and most anticipated events in Rabat.”

Festa Tfal kicks off with a morning mass at the parish church, followed by a grand procession through the narrow streets of Rabat. Children, dressed in their Sunday best, carry statues of the saints, while bands play lively marches. The procession ends at the main square, where a day of fun and games awaits.

The square transforms into a children’s paradise, with game stalls, face painting, and bouncy castles. The highlight? The ‘Tfal tal-Madonna’ (Children of the Madonna) competition, where children dressed as angels and cherubs parade in front of a panel of judges, vying for the coveted title.

As the sun sets, the square comes alive with a spectacular fireworks display, a fitting end to a day of joy and celebration.

Festa Tfal is more than just a day of fun. It’s a community event that brings people together, a tradition that has been passed down through generations. It’s a reminder of the importance of joy, innocence, and simplicity in our lives.

“Festa Tfal is about creating happy memories for our children,” says Joseph, a father of two. “It’s about giving them a day to look forward to, a day to remember. And it’s about coming together as a community to celebrate our little ones.”
