Ħamrun’s District 8: Redrawing the Lines
District 8 Profile: Redrawing the Lines – The New Face of Ħamrun
Ħamrun, a stone’s throw away from Malta’s capital city, Valletta, has always been a bustling town. But lately, something’s different. The once sleepy streets are buzzing with a new energy. Welcome to District 8, Ħamrun’s latest urban regeneration project, where the old is making way for the new.
From Industrial Hub to Urban Living
Ħamrun, known for its industrial past, is now redefining its identity. District 8, a €150 million project, is transforming the town’s former industrial heartland into a vibrant, mixed-use development. “It’s not just about building new structures,” says project architect, Mario Mifsud. “It’s about creating a new community, a new way of living.”
At the core of District 8 is the redevelopment of the former Ħamrun Power Station. The iconic building, a symbol of Ħamrun’s industrial past, is being transformed into a cultural hub, housing a museum, art galleries, and a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the Grand Harbour.
Green Spaces and Sustainable Living
But District 8 isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s also about greenery and sustainability. The project includes the creation of new public spaces, like the Central Park, a green lung in the heart of the development. “We want to create a place where people want to live, work, and play,” says Mifsud.
The development also prioritizes sustainability. It aims for a BREEAM Excellent rating, the highest sustainability standard for buildings. Solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient designs are just some of the features that will make District 8 one of Malta’s greenest developments.
Revitalizing Ħamrun’s High Street
District 8 isn’t an isolated project. It’s part of a broader effort to revitalize Ħamrun’s high street. The town’s main thoroughfare, Triq il-Kbira, is being pedestrianized, with new street furniture, public art, and greenery. “We want to make Ħamrun’s high street a place where people want to spend time,” says Ħamrun Local Council Mayor, John J. Tripodi.
And it’s not just about looks. The revitalization is also attracting new businesses. “We’ve seen an increase in interest from retailers and restaurants,” says Tripodi. “They see the potential in Ħamrun, thanks to projects like District 8.”
But what does this mean for Ħamrun’s residents? “It means a better quality of life,” says long-time Ħamrun resident, Maria Mercieca. “It means more jobs, more places to go, more reasons to be proud of our town.”
District 8, and the broader regeneration of Ħamrun, is more than just a construction project. It’s a story of a town redefining itself, of a community embracing change. It’s a story that’s still being written, but one thing’s for sure – Ħamrun is no longer just a town on the way to Valletta. It’s a destination in its own right.
Getting There
To reach District 8, take bus number 1, 2, or 3 from Valletta to Ħamrun. The development is a short walk from Ħamrun Bus Terminus. Alternatively, you can take the Malta Railway from Valletta to Ħamrun Station, which is just a stone’s throw away from District 8.
