Heavy Vehicles at Xewkija Park-and-Ride: Temporary or Not?

Temporary or Not, Heavy Vehicles Stir Xewkija Park-and-Ride Debate

XEWKIJA, Malta – The hum of heavy vehicles has become an unusual symphony at the Xewkija park-and-ride facility, a sight that’s been puzzling and, for some, perturbing locals. The Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects has stepped in to clarify that these vehicles are ‘temporary’, but the question on everyone’s mind is, temporary until when?

From Buses to Trucks: A Change in Scene

Xewkija’s park-and-ride, located off Triq l-Imqabba, was initially designed to accommodate public transport buses, providing a seamless transfer point for commuters. However, in recent months, the scene has shifted. Trucks and heavy goods vehicles have started using the facility, their presence a stark contrast to the original intent.

Residents have been left wondering about this change. “I’ve seen trucks parking here at all hours,” said Joe, a long-time Xewkija resident. “It’s not what this place was meant for. It’s causing congestion and noise, especially at night.”

Ministry’s Stance: Temporary but How Long?

The Ministry has acknowledged the change, attributing it to ‘operational needs’. A spokesperson stated, “The use of the Xewkija park-and-ride by heavy vehicles is temporary. We understand the concerns of residents and are working to ensure minimal disruption.” But temporary until when? That’s the million Euro question.

Environmental concerns have also been raised. “These vehicles are emitting fumes right next to residential areas,” said a concerned resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re worried about the health implications, especially for children.”

Local Councillor Weighs In

Councillor for Xewkija, Joseph Muscat, has been vocal about the issue. “We’ve been in touch with the Ministry,” he said. “We understand the need for flexibility in operations, but not at the cost of our residents’ quality of life. We’re pushing for a clear timeline and a plan to revert to the original purpose of the park-and-ride.”

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the temporary presence of heavy vehicles at Xewkija’s park-and-ride has sparked a conversation about the balance between operational needs and community well-being. The Ministry’s next move will be crucial in shaping the future of this contentious issue.
