Heavy Vehicles at Xewkija Park-and-Ride: Temporary or Not?
Temporary or Not, Heavy Vehicles Stir Controversy at Xewkija Park-and-Ride
Picture this: the usually quiet, tree-lined streets of Xewkija, Gozo, now echo with the rumble of heavy vehicles. The reason? They’ve found a new, albeit ‘temporary’, home at the Xewkija park-and-ride. But is this arrangement as fleeting as the ministry claims?
The Ministry’s Stance: A ‘Temporary’ Solution
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has been quick to reassure residents and commuters alike that the presence of heavy vehicles at the park-and-ride is merely a stopgap measure. A spokesperson told Hot Malta, “These vehicles are only using the facility temporarily while their usual parking areas undergo maintenance.”
But ‘temporary’ is a word that’s being met with raised eyebrows and skepticism. Especially when you consider that the heavy vehicles – trucks, vans, and buses – have been parked there for several weeks now, with no clear end in sight.
Residents and Commuters: Weighing In on the Issue
Xewkija residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns. “It’s not just the noise,” says Maria, a long-time resident. “But the safety aspect too. These vehicles are blocking the pathways, making it difficult for pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled.”
Commuters, too, are feeling the pinch. “I’ve had to park further away and walk to the bus stop,” says Daniel, a daily commuter to Mgarr Harbour. “It’s not ideal, especially on cold, rainy days.”
However, not everyone is against the idea. “It’s a parking space that’s not being used to its full potential,” argues Joseph, a local businessman. “If it’s only temporary, why not make use of it?”
The Future of Xewkija’s Park-and-Ride
The ministry has promised that the situation will be rectified as soon as the maintenance works at the usual parking areas are completed. But until then, Xewkija’s park-and-ride remains a hot topic of debate.
So, is this temporary arrangement set to become a permanent fixture? . But one thing’s for sure – the usually peaceful streets of Xewkija won’t be the same until the heavy vehicles find a new, more permanent home.
