Malta Candidate Spends Campaign Funds on Life-Saving Defibrillator
Local Hero’s Unconventional Campaign Spend
Imagine this: instead of the usual campaign flyers littering Malta’s streets, you find a shiny, life-saving defibrillator outside your local bakery. This is exactly what happened in the small town of Żurrieq, thanks to candidate Joseph Vella.
In a refreshing twist to election campaigns, Vella decided to spend his budget not on traditional promotional materials, but on something that could truly make a difference to his community. He installed a public access defibrillator (PAD) on Triq l-Indipendenza, Żurrieq’s main street.
Why a Defibrillator?
Vella’s decision was driven by a personal experience. “I lost a close friend to sudden cardiac arrest,” he told Hot Malta. “I realized that having a defibrillator nearby could have saved his life. I wanted to ensure that no one else in Żurrieq faces the same tragedy.”
According to the Maltese Heart Foundation, sudden cardiac arrest claims around 400 lives annually in Malta. Having more PADs in public places could significantly improve survival rates. The device Vella installed is fully automated, making it accessible to anyone, regardless of medical training.
Community Response
The Żurrieq community has embraced Vella’s unconventional campaign strategy. “I’ve had people come up to me, thanking me for the defibrillator,” Vella said. “They understand that it’s not just about winning votes, but about making our town a safer place.”
Local businesses have also shown their support. The bakery where the defibrillator is installed, Il-Forno, has even offered to maintain it. “It’s our way of giving back to the community,” owner Mario Azzopardi told Hot Malta.
Vella’s actions have sparked conversations about what truly matters in election campaigns. “It’s not about who shouts the loudest or spends the most,” Vella said. “It’s about who listens to the community and acts on their needs.”
As Malta heads into election season, Vella’s example sets a new standard for campaigning. It’s not about the noise, but the impact. And in Żurrieq, that impact is literally life-saving.
