Malta Candidate’s Unorthodox Campaign: Defibrillators Over Flyers

Imagine this: instead of the usual campaign flyers cluttering your doorstep, you find a shiny new public defibrillator outside your home in Msida. This is exactly what happened when local candidate, Joseph Azzopardi, decided to spend his campaign funds differently.

From Flyers to Life-Savers

In a refreshing twist to traditional campaigning, Joseph Azzopardi, running for local council in Msida, chose to invest his campaign budget in public safety rather than self-promotion. Instead of printing flyers, he purchased and installed three public defibrillators around the town.

“I wanted to make a difference that would outlast my campaign,” Azzopardi told Hot Malta. “Defibrillators save lives, and I believe that’s a better use of campaign funds than promoting myself.”

Msida’s New Life-Savers

You’ll now find the life-saving devices at strategic locations around Msida: one outside the Santa Venera Parish Church, another at the Msida Sports Complex, and the third at the Msida Creek Promenade. Each defibrillator is clearly marked with Azzopardi’s campaign logo and a note reading, “A gift to the community from Joseph Azzopardi.”

Residents have welcomed the initiative. “It’s a practical, thoughtful gesture,” said Maria Grech, a long-time Msida resident. “I’d rather see these than another flyer cluttering my street.”

Setting a New Campaign Standard?

Azzopardi’s unconventional campaign has sparked conversation about what’s possible in local politics. Could this be a new trend in Maltese campaigning, focusing on tangible community benefits rather than self-promotion?

Other candidates have taken note. “It’s an innovative idea,” said another local candidate, who wished to remain anonymous. “It shows that there are different ways to campaign and make a difference.”

As election day approaches, Azzopardi’s defibrillators stand as a visible reminder of his commitment to the community. Whether they’ll influence voters’ decisions remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: they’ve already saved lives.

“I’ve had calls from people thanking me for the defibrillators,” Azzopardi said. “That’s all the thanks I need.”
