Malta Echoes Ukraine’s EU Bid

Zelensky’s Plea: Ukraine’s EU Bid Echoes in Malta’s Streets

Malta’s bustling Republic Street, a stone’s throw from the Grandmaster’s Palace, was abuzz with chatter in late April. Among the usual tourist chatter and local shoppers, a different conversation echoed – the news that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had called for his country’s full EU membership. The call, made during a virtual address to the European Parliament, resonated with many Maltese, given our own EU journey and shared history.

Malta’s EU Path: A Beacon for Ukraine

Malta’s EU accession process, which began in 1990 and culminated in 2004, is a story etched in the minds of many Maltese. From the early days of negotiations to the jubilant celebrations upon accession, the EU journey is a significant part of our collective memory. This shared experience has fostered empathy and understanding for Ukraine’s EU aspirations.

In the heart of Valletta, at the newly refurbished Pjazza Teatru Rjal, locals and tourists alike have been discussing the implications of Zelensky’s call. The square, once a symbol of Malta’s cultural resilience after the Great Siege, now serves as a hub for political discourse. Many Maltese see parallels between their EU journey and Ukraine’s, with one local saying, “If Malta could do it, why not Ukraine?”

Local Voices: Solidarity and Caution

While support for Ukraine’s EU bid is widespread, there are also voices of caution. Malta’s EU journey was not without its challenges, and many Maltese are aware of the complexities involved in EU accession. At the popular Strait Street café, Café Society, patrons debated the intricacies of EU negotiations, with one regular noting, “It’s not just about wanting it. Ukraine needs to be ready, and the EU needs to be prepared too.”

Yet, solidarity with Ukraine remains strong. In the quaint town of Żejtun, known for its rich history and traditional architecture, a local councilor emphasized, “We stand with Ukraine. We know what it’s like to strive for something bigger, and we hope they succeed.” The town’s historic streets, lined with traditional Maltese balconies, have been adorned with Ukrainian flags, a testament to this solidarity.

Malta’s Role: A Bridge Between East and West

Malta’s strategic location has always made it a bridge between the East and the West. This unique position has shaped our history and culture, and it’s a role we continue to play today. In the context of Ukraine’s EU bid, Malta can serve as a bridge of understanding, using our experience to support Ukraine’s journey and to foster dialogue between the EU and Ukraine.

In the coming months, as the EU considers Ukraine’s request, Malta can play a crucial role in facilitating this conversation. Our experience, our location, and our empathy for Ukraine’s cause put us in a unique position to do so.

As the sun sets over the Three Cities, casting a golden glow over the historic skyline, it’s clear that Malta’s EU journey continues to inspire and inform our present and future. As we look towards the future, let’s ensure that Malta remains a beacon of support and understanding for Ukraine’s EU aspirations.
