Malta Minister Warns: No Shortcuts in Construction Safety
Safety First: Minister Warns of No Shortcuts in Construction
Imagine walking down Strait Street, Malta’s once-notorious ‘Strada Stretta’, now a bustling hub of cafes and bars. Look up, and you’ll see scaffolding, a sign of the island’s construction boom. But behind the progress, there’s a stark reminder: safety can’t be compromised. Last week, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Ian Borg, echoed this sentiment, stating, “There’s no room for shortcuts in construction health and safety.”
Construction Boom Brings Safety Concerns
Malta’s construction sector is thriving. From high-rise residential projects in Msida to commercial developments in Birkirkara, cranes dot the skyline. Yet, this growth has raised eyebrows among safety advocates. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), the construction industry accounted for 28% of all work-related accidents in 2020.
“The construction boom brings jobs and investment, but it also brings risks,” said Borg. “We must ensure that our growth is sustainable and safe.”
Minister’s Warning: No Shortcuts Allowed
Borg’s warning comes on the heels of a spate of safety incidents. In March, a worker fell from a height at a construction site in Żabbar, highlighting the dangers faced by those working at height. The minister was clear: “Shortcuts in safety measures are unacceptable. Every site must prioritise safety, no matter the project’s size or deadline.”
Borg announced plans to strengthen enforcement and increase penalties for safety violations. He also called on industry stakeholders to step up their game, “We need everyone – contractors, subcontractors, and workers – to take responsibility. Safety is not just the responsibility of OHSA; it’s ours too.”
Local Initiatives Promoting Safety Culture
While the minister’s warning sends a strong message, local initiatives are also promoting a culture of safety. The Construction Safety Forum, a collaboration between industry stakeholders and OHSA, is pushing for better training and awareness. Their ‘Safety Starts with Me’ campaign encourages workers to take personal responsibility for their safety and that of their colleagues.
the Malta Construction Authority (MCA) has launched a ‘Safety at Height’ awareness campaign, focusing on the dangers of working at height. Their message is clear: safety should never be an afterthought, especially when working at height.
Malta’s construction sector is at a crossroads. It can either continue with business as usual, risking lives and reputations, or it can embrace a culture of safety, ensuring that Malta’s construction boom is sustainable, safe, and responsible.
As Borg put it, “We’re building more than just structures. We’re building a safer future for all those who work in our industry and for the communities they serve.”
