Malta’s Construction Safety: ‘No Room for Shortcuts’, Says Minister

Safety First: Minister Warns ‘No Room for Shortcuts’ in Construction

Picture this: the bustling streets of Triq San Gwann, Birkirkara, a construction site buzzing with activity. Cranes tower over half-finished buildings, workers in high-vis vests scurry about, and the air is filled with the hum of machinery. It’s a scene that’s become all too familiar in Malta’s booming construction industry. But what’s less visible, yet equally important, is the safety measures in place to protect these workers.

Minister’s Stern Warning

Dr. Clifton Grima, Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure, has issued a stark reminder to the construction sector: ‘No room for shortcuts’ when it comes to health and safety. Speaking at a recent conference, he emphasized, “We’re not just building structures, we’re building lives. And those lives deserve our utmost respect and protection.”

Local Stats and Stories

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), there were 273 reported accidents in the construction sector in 2020 alone. While this is a decrease from previous years, it’s a stark reminder that there’s still much work to be done. One such incident involved a worker falling from a height at a construction site in Msida, leaving him with severe injuries.

But there are also stories of success. Take the example of a construction company in Żebbuġ that has consistently maintained a perfect safety record for over a decade. Their secret? Regular training, strict safety protocols, and a culture that prioritizes worker well-being.

What’s Being Done?

Minister Grima has announced plans to introduce stricter penalties for safety violations and to increase inspections. He also emphasized the importance of education, saying, “We need to ensure that every worker, from apprentice to site manager, understands the importance of safety and their role in maintaining it.”

the OHSA is working on a new campaign to raise awareness about construction safety. The campaign, set to launch later this year, will target both workers and the general public, aiming to foster a culture of safety in Malta’s construction industry.

As we look to the future, with construction projects continuing to spring up across the island, it’s clear that safety cannot be an afterthought. It must be at the heart of every decision, every action. Because as Minister Grima reminded us, ‘We’re not just building structures, we’re building lives.’

Let’s make sure those lives are safe and protected.
