Malta’s Deep-Sea Pioneer: Exploring the Atlantic’s Forgotten Realm
Imagine plunging into the abyss, where sunlight fades, and the pressure is crushing. This is the world Dr. Miriam Borg, a Maltese marine biologist, is about to explore. She’s leading an international team on a deep-sea expedition to the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, a remote part of the Atlantic Ocean, 4,000 meters below sea level.
Malta’s Deep-Sea Pioneer: A Local Journey to the Abyss
Dr. Borg’s journey begins not in some distant port, but right here in Malta. Born and raised in Msida, she’s always had a fascination with the sea. “Growing up by the sea in Malta, I’ve always been drawn to its mysteries,” she says. After studying at the University of Malta and later in the UK, she’s now a senior researcher at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. But her heart remains Maltese.
Her upcoming expedition is part of the international ‘Tara Pacific’ mission, exploring the world’s deepest trenches. The Porcupine Abyssal Plain, their first stop, is a vast underwater desert, home to unique ecosystems and mysterious creatures. It’s also a critical carbon sink, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.
Into the Depths: Technology and Discovery
The team will use state-of-the-art technology to explore this alien world. Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) will descend into the abyss, broadcasting live footage back to the surface. “It’s like exploring another planet,” says Dr. Borg. “We’re expecting to find new species, and perhaps even new ecosystems.”
The expedition will also collect data on the impact of climate change and human activity on these remote depths. “We think we know our oceans,” says Dr. Borg, “but we’ve barely scratched the surface.”
Malta’s Role in Ocean Exploration
Malta, with its strategic location and maritime history, has a significant role to play in ocean exploration. The Malta-based company, MedINA, is providing support for the expedition. “We’re proud to support Dr. Borg and her team,” says a spokesperson. “Malta is at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. We have a responsibility to understand and protect our oceans.”
Back in Msida, Dr. Borg’s parents watch the news, proud of their daughter’s achievements. “She’s always been curious,” says her mother. “Now she’s exploring the unknown, right from our little island.”
