Malta’s Disability Card Holders Get Free Hydrotherapy

Unlocking Relief: Free Hydrotherapy for Malta’s Disability Card Holders

Imagine the relief of feeling your muscles relax, tension melting away as you float in warm, soothing water. Now, picture this experience being accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial circumstances. This is the reality that Malta’s disability card holders are set to enjoy, thanks to a new initiative by the government.

What is Hydrotherapy and How Does it Help?

Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is a form of physical therapy that uses water to help relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, allowing for easier movement and reduced stress on joints. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals with disabilities, chronic pain, or rehabilitation needs.

In Malta, where our Mediterranean climate lends itself to water-based activities, hydrotherapy has been gaining traction. Yet, until now, the cost has been a barrier for many. That’s all set to change with the government’s latest announcement.

Free Hydrotherapy Sessions for Disability Card Holders

In a move aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, the government has announced that disability card holders will now be eligible for free hydrotherapy sessions. The scheme, launched in collaboration with the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, will cover the cost of sessions at approved facilities across the island.

Minister for Inclusion and Social Well-being, Julia Farrugia Portelli, stated, “This initiative forms part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to the services they need to lead fulfilling and independent lives.”

How to Access the Free Hydrotherapy Sessions

To access the free hydrotherapy sessions, disability card holders simply need to present their card at one of the approved facilities. The government has partnered with several swimming pools and therapy centers across Malta, including:

    • The National Pool in Gżira
    • Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex in Msida
    • St. Martin’s School Pool in Rabat
    • St. George’s Bay Swimming Pool in Paceville

Each card holder will be entitled to a set number of free sessions per year, with the exact number to be determined based on individual needs and availability.

: Expanding Accessibility

While this initiative is a significant step forward, it’s just the beginning. The government has expressed its commitment to expanding accessibility to therapies and services for individuals with disabilities. , we can expect to see more initiatives like this, aimed at improving the lives of Malta’s disability community.
