Malta’s Early Birds: Over Half of Voters Cast Their Ballots

As the sun set over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the first day of early voting in Malta’s local council elections came to a close. But the action wasn’t over yet. Inside the polling stations, from Msida to Żurrieq, voters were still trickling in, making their voices heard. By the end of the day, more than 59% of registered voters had done just that, setting a new record for early voting in Malta.

Why the Rush?

So, why the sudden surge in early voting? For some, it’s about convenience. With work, family, and life in general keeping us busy, finding time to vote on election day can be a challenge. Early voting, which started on Monday and runs until Friday, offers a solution. It’s a chance to cast your ballot without the last-minute rush or the worry of long queues.

For others, it’s about making a statement. “I wanted to send a clear message that I care about our democracy,” said Maria, a 35-year-old marketing professional from Birkirkara, who voted at the St. Joseph School polling station. “I think it’s important for everyone to vote, whether it’s early or on election day.”

Breaking Down the Numbers

But who exactly are these early voters? According to the Electoral Commission, they’re a diverse bunch. They’re young and old, from across all six districts, and they’re voting for a variety of political parties. In fact, the commission reports that the distribution of votes among parties is similar to previous elections.

However, there’s one notable difference this time around. The number of early voters is significantly higher. In the 2019 local council elections, only around 40% of voters cast their ballots early. This time, that number has jumped to over 59%. That’s a significant increase, and it’s got political parties and election officials taking notice.

What’s Next?

With early voting wrapping up on Friday, all eyes will be on election day this Sunday. Will the trend of early voting continue? Will we see another record-breaking turnout? . But one thing’s for sure: Malta’s voters are making their voices heard, loud and clear.

As Malta’s political scene continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the power of the vote. So, whether you’re an early bird or a last-minute voter, make sure your voice is heard. After all, it’s your right, and it’s your future.

Remember, polls are open from 7 am to 10 pm on Sunday. And if you’re not sure where to vote, you can find your polling station on the Electoral Commission’s website.

Now, go make your mark, Malta!
