Malta’s Early Voting Begins: Here’s Where & How to Cast Your Ballot

Early Voting Kicks Off: Your Guide to Casting Your Ballot Before Election Day

It’s a crisp morning in Malta’s capital, Valletta. The sun is barely up, but already, a steady stream of people is making its way towards the Grandmaster’s Palace. They’re not here for the usual tourist attractions, but to exercise their democratic right – they’re among the first to cast their votes in this year’s early voting period.

Early voting, a relatively new addition to Malta’s electoral process, began today, allowing registered voters to cast their ballots ahead of the main election day on 26 March. If you’re one of the many Maltese eager to have your say but can’t make it on the 26th, here’s your guide to making the most of this opportunity.

Where and When Can You Vote Early?

Early voting is taking place at designated polling stations across Malta and Gozo from today, 13 March, until 24 March. You can vote between 9 am and 6 pm on weekdays, and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Here are a few key locations:

    • In Valletta, you can vote at the Grandmaster’s Palace, Auberge d’Italie.
    • In Malta’s second city, Birkirkara, head to the Birkirkara Sports Club.
    • In Gozo, the polling station is at the Gozo Sports Complex in Xewkija.

For a full list of early voting stations, check the Electoral Commission’s website.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

First things first, ensure you’re registered to vote. If you’re not sure, you can check your registration status online. You’ll need your ID card or passport to vote, so don’t forget to bring it with you.

Once you’re at the polling station, follow the signs and instructions. You’ll be given a ballot paper with the list of candidates. Remember, you can vote for up to three candidates, depending on the district you’re voting in. Fold your completed ballot paper in half, place it in the ballot box, and you’re done!

If you’re voting in Malta, you can also choose to vote by post. You’ll need to apply for a postal vote by 18 March. For more information, visit the Electoral Commission’s website.

Why Vote Early?

Early voting offers a convenient alternative to voting on the main election day. It’s ideal for those with busy schedules, or those who want to avoid the potential queues on the 26th. Plus, every vote counts, and early voting helps ensure your voice is heard.

So, whether you’re an early bird like our voters in Valletta today, or prefer to plan ahead, early voting is a great way to make sure you don’t miss out on your chance to vote. See you at the polling station!
