Mellieħa Land Transfer: ADPD Calls for Reversal
ADPD’s Land Grab: Mellieħa Residents Up in Arms Over Government’s Latest Move
Imagine waking up to find out that the lush, green field you’ve been enjoying your morning jog on for years is suddenly off-limits. This isn’t a scene from a dystopian film, but a reality facing residents of Mellieħa after the government’s recent decision to transfer a large tract of land to the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM). The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) has since called on the government to reverse this course, sparking a heated debate in the community.
From Public to Private: The Land Transfer Controversy
The land in question, measuring around 30,000 square metres, is located in the heart of Mellieħa, just off Triq il-Kbira (Main Street). It’s been used by the public for various recreational activities, from football matches to family picnics. However, the government has decided to hand it over to the AFM, citing security concerns and the need for military training facilities. This move has left many Mellieħa residents bewildered and angry, feeling that their voices have been silenced in the process.
“This land has been a lifeline for our community,” says Maria Grech, a long-time Mellieħa resident. “It’s where we bring our children to play, where we gather for community events. To just take it away like this, without any consultation, is unacceptable.”
ADPD Steps In: A Call for Reversal
The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) has been at the forefront of this controversy, calling on the government to reverse its decision. AD’s spokesperson on the environment, Rossella Piscopo, has been vocal in her criticism, arguing that the government has failed to consider the environmental and social impact of this transfer.
“This land is not just a piece of real estate,” Piscopo says. “It’s a vital green lung for Mellieħa, and it’s been taken away without any regard for the people who use it and enjoy it. We’re calling on the government to listen to the community and reverse this decision.”
: The Battle for Mellieħa’s Green Space
The future of this land remains uncertain, with the government standing firm on its decision while ADPD and Mellieħa residents continue to push for a reversal. The coming weeks and months will be crucial in determining the outcome of this battle for Mellieħa’s green space.
As Maria Grech puts it, “This is about more than just a piece of land. It’s about our right to enjoy and protect our environment, and our right to have a say in what happens in our community. We won’t give up without a fight.”
